Abstract. The aim of this research is to explore various issues related to the interpretation of gender
by examining the meanings within the verses of the Qur’an.the meanings included in the Qur'anic
verses, this study seeks to investigate a number of topics pertaining to the understanding of gender.
Furthermore, it aims to clarify any possible misunderstandings by discussing gender equality from
the viewpoint of the Qur'an itself. The primary research approach used in this work is library
research, which includes a thorough analysis of pertinent literature. The goal of this study is to offer
a thorough analysis of the Qur'anic verses in order to create a comprehensive knowledge of gender
equality. The research findings include a thorough analysis of the Qur'anic definitions of gender and
the verses that summarize the fundamental ideas of gender equality.
1. Introduction
The contemporary discussion on Gender is influenced by cultural norms within societal frameworks.
"Social construction is the idea that facts are not found, but rather created, and this is an
epistemological perspective accepted in both natural and social sciences". Its impact is widely
debated across various sectors, including economic, social, and educational domains. Religion also
plays a significant role in shaping this discourse. Misunderstandings often arise in scholarly
discussions about how Islam addresses gender equality. "The perception of women as weak and less
capable beings is gradually eroded by historical facts". The introduction of Islam to Arab society
opposed traditions conflicting with its teachings, aiming to counter gender inequality and expand
women's roles beyond the domestic sphere. The Quran, considered a guiding principle for human life
by adherent Muslims, presents its own distinct concept in addressing gender-related matters. This
research aims to analyze the Quran's verses and explore the concept of gender equality in Islam to
rectify misunderstandings surrounding this topic in the contemporary world.
2. Methodology
The research methodology utilized in this study is based on data acquisition, classifying it as a
literature-based research or commonly referred to as Library Research. The researcher gathers
primary and supporting data pertaining to the research topic, including books, articles, journals, and
other relevant sources. Subsequently, the collected data is analyzed and described in the Results and
Conclusion section of the research paper.
Linguistically speaking, the term "gender" refers to a classification based on biological sex. The idea
of gender is derived from linguistic constructions that are present in many languages, where the
distinction between male and female categories is made using the term "gender." Within the social
sciences, gender is linked to the introduction of distinctive characteristics that are not primarily
based on biology and are frequently attributed to males and females. The term "gender" refers to
the societal constructions that set men and women apart. As a result, it implies that gender is a
social construct molded by the socio-cultural context, which affects views of innate attributes
associated with each gender rather than an innate trait given upon humans by God at birth. The
concept of gender is what separates men and women.
To interpret gender within the framework of equality based on the Qur’an, an analysis
of the Qur’anic verses can be conducted. Several aspects can be considered to analyse the
principles of understanding the concept of gender equality through the Qur’an.
1) The principle that males and females are equal as servants
In Surah Az-Zariyat, verse 56, it is stated that the purpose of human creation is none
other than to worship the Creator, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. From this perspective, it can
be understood that there is no differentiation in terms of worship between males and
females; both have an equal share. The difference lies in their piety towards Allah, not
in their gender, ethnicity, culture, or any other distinguishing factors. Everyone is equal
in the way Allah has organized the creation of humans to submit and obey Him through
worship, without considering their status or hierarchy.
In Surah Al-An’am, verse 165, Allah states that humans are created not only as servants
(‘Abid) to submit and obey the Creator through worship, but also as leaders (khalifah) on
this Earth, responsible for performing good deeds. The term “khalifah” in this context
does not exclusively refer to one gender but applies generally to both males and females.
4) The principle that Prophet Adam and eve were actively involved in the cosmic event
Verses describing the cosmic event narrate the circumstances of Adam and Eve’s departure
from paradise and their arrival on Earth. These verses indicate that there is no
inclination to assign blame to either party involved in the incident. The following verses
discuss the cosmic event:
Al-Baqarah, Verse 35
This verse indicates that both Adam and Eve were created in the same place, namely
paradise, and they enjoyed the facilities provided there.
Al-A’raf, Verse 20
This verse reveals that Satan tempted Adam and Eve equally.
Al-A’raf, Verse 22
This verse states that both Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden fruit.
Al-A’raf, Verse 23
This verse describes how Adam and Eve sought forgiveness and were forgiven by
God.
Al-Baqarah, Verse 187
Based on the explanations provided in these verses, it can be understood that during the
cosmic event, Adam and Eve were mentioned together in the Qur’an without
attributing blame to either party, emphasizing their shared responsibility for the incident.

that during the cosmic event of Adam and Eve, as mentioned in the Qur’an, no
blame is attributed to either party, and both are equally responsible for the occurrence

4. Conclusion
The study identifies key terms such as Ar-Rijal and An-Nisa', Adz-Zakar and Al-Untsa, and Al-
Mar'u/Al-Imru'u and Al-Mar'ah/Al-Imra'ah, shedding light on their linguistic origins and
diverse meanings within the Qur'an. The nuanced analysis emphasizes the complexity and
depth of these terms, encompassing biological, social, and cultural dimensions. The research
systematically addresses these terms, illustrating the intricate ways in which gender is
portrayed in the Qur'an.
Furthermore, the study elucidates the concept of gender equality within the Qur'an. It
explores the idea that males and females are equal as servants, leaders, and participants in a
primordial covenant with their Creator. The narrative of Prophet Adam and Eve is examined,
emphasizing the shared responsibility without attributing blame to either party. The research
also underscores the Qur'an's assertion that both genders have the potential to achieve
equal accomplishments, rejecting discrimination in various aspects of life.
