that we are enough because now I
always say that little progress is still
progress.
What a nice answer, Thank you, Regine!
Now let’s have Group 2

realized that overthinking can destroy
you of the things that is not happening

focus in what is happening today and
focus on the things now rather than
overthinking it.

Thank you, Jericho for your wonderful answer.

Thank you, ma’am

Thank you, for your participation class. Now do

you have any idea what is our lesson for today?
Yes, Torres?
I think our lesson is about conflict
ma’am.

That is right our lesson is about conflict

Now, let us start our discussion.
Conflict:
Conflict is serious disagreement and argument
about something important. If two people or
groups are in the conflict, they have had a serious
disagreement or argument and have not yet
reached agreement.

Types of conflict:
1. Man vs. Person Also called man vs. man
and protagonist vs. antagonist, this is the
most common type of external conflict. It is
clear and universally understood as a good
vs. evil story in which an unambiguous
challenger opposes the main character.
The heart of this type of story involves two
characters with opposing outlooks,
opinions, or goals. The story will become
richer when both characters believe
themselves to be right or when there is no
clear right or wrong between their
differences.
Example:
- In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen
must go up against other contestants in
order to survive – her vs. them

2. Man vs. Nature This type of conflict

counters a character against some force of
nature, such as an animal or the weather.
Example:
- A classic example is Ernest Hemingway’s -
Old Man and the Sea In Life of Pi, the
protagonist must face a tiger trapped in the
boat with him.
3. Man vs. Society When a novel sets a
character against a tradition, an institution,
a law, or some other societal construct, it is
a Man vs. Society story.
Example:
- Atticus Finch opposed his racist community
in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird
- Wilbur fights for his survival against a
society that eats pigs in Charlotte’s Web
- In Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale,
the society treats women as property of the
state; Atwood makes the story even more
interesting by layering in environmental
disasters (Man vs. Nature) to intensify the
conflict
4. Man vs. Technology When science moves
beyond human control, conflicts of Man vs.
Technology develop.
- Stories in this conflict type include: 2001:
- A Space Odyssey Mary Shelley’s
- Frankenstein I, Robot Apollo 13
2. Reading/Viewing
b. (The teacher will give handouts about the story
“The Vegetarian”) Skim for main conflict After
reading, the teacher will provide a story map and
let her students answer it on the board
So, what is the title and the author of the story?

Kang ma’am.

Good job! Thank you Millanes.

It is Yeong-hye ma’am

What about the setting? Yes, Pulido?

The setting is in Seoul, Korea ma’am

What about the conflict of the story? Yes,

Jameson?
It explores the irreconcilable conflict
between our two selves: one greedy,
primitive; the other accountable to
family and society.
That is right! The story explores the irreconcilable
conflict between our two selves: one greedy,
primitive; the other accountable to family and
society.

3. Post-reading/post viewing
b. (The teacher will ask questions about what
they understand about the lesson?)

types in a story, and there will always
be a conflict in a story to have
entertainment for the watchers.

E. Valuing

Ma’am the values embedded in the

story encourage reflection on the
nature of personal freedom, identity,
and the impact of societal norms on
individual lives.

Excellent! It encourage us reflection on the nature

of personal freedom, identity, nd the impact of
societal norms on individual lives Thank you,
Charmie.

G. Synthesis:

watchers? Yes, Jericho?

The Vegetarian has been described

as a parable, one that comments on
the need to conform, as well as social
expectations within South Korea.
