CASE ANALYSIS

You are assigned to take care of Kristine, 6 years old, diagnosed with pneumonia. After making her
bed, you give her an intradermal injection as a skin test for her newly ordered antibiotic. The next
day, she starts to cry while you are making the bed. The lack of what cognitive process led her to this
reaction? State your answer and explain why. Type your answer below.

Taking into consideration that Kristine is 6 years old, it might be her first time to experience
medications or tests through needles such as intradermal injection and skin test. So base on her age, I
think that what lacks in the cognitive process is the perception and learning in that present situation of
Kristine. Perception uses both old and new information to allow the brain to understand, make sense
of, respond to, and perceive various events. To function optimally, touch, smell, sight, and hearing are
all used in perception. So in Kristine, she might percept only the pain she felt, not with the benefits and
purpose of the injection and skin test. On the other hand, in learning, all of this data is then turned into
things like discussion and new ideas. We process new information and develop new knowledge when
we learn. Our brain's ability to store knowledge is increased when stored information from the past
meets new information. Kristine percepts and somehow learned that having this type of medication is
painful and that’s why the on next day she started to cry while making the bed.

Children on her age are more of exploring stage of the world in general. Due to lack of
knowledge and experience about health care in her status, Kristine might also think that having
intradermal injections and skin test are types of penalty of her parents for her side because of having or
getting pneumonia. With that said, Kristine is still learning new things and exploring the happenings of
the environment, and it’s a natural response for her developmental stage. Therefore proper health care
teachings in young children is also as important as in other higher level of developmental stage, we
should also collaborate with the family, to encourage the family members of Kristine to gradually start
teaching her about the aspects of health education, to reduce the anxiety, awareness, and meet the
patient care they want to receive.
