PREFACE
Spelling
T h e Yakan alphabei used here consists of the following letters: -
a,b,d,e,g,h,i,j,k,',l,m.n.o.p,r,s,t,n,w,y.The raised comma o r apostrophe, ',
signifies glottal catch. All other letters hzve roughly the same phonetic value
as their National Language equivalents.
In writing Pilipicc 1 have followed the conventions of a grave accent f')
to mark final glortai catch:
z.g. ugali
and of an acute accent (') to mark a stressed syllable when it is irregular:
e.g. ash, mura
When both accents occur on the same syllable the result is an upside down v
(-1 :
e.g. lara
T h e Yakan vocabulary for this dictionary was collected during a two-
year period of residence in Badja. Lamitan, Basilan, under the auspices of the
Summer Institute of Linguistics, Philippines Branch. The Pilipino material
was taken from two excellent dictionaries:
English-Tagalog Dictionary: Leo James English C.Ss.R. Dept. of Education of
the R.P. and Commonwealth of Australia 1965
Talahuluganang Pilipino-Ingles: Jose Villa Panganiban. Maynila Kawanihan
ng Palimbagan 1966
