CHAPTER 5: CIRCULAR MOTION

Answer following questions:

1. A person is staying on planet Mars situated at the equator observes that it takes
24 hours and 30 minutes for one whole day. The radius of Mars is 3850 km
and is rotating about its axis. Calculate
i. The angular velocity of Mars’s rotation.

ii. The speed of the person as Mars rotates.

iii. Does the person realize he is moving with the speed calculated in (ii)? Give
reason(s) to support your answer.

[ANS: 7.12 × 10-5 rad/s, 274.27 m/s, DIY]

2. A motorbike moving at a constant speed 20.0 m/s in a circular track of radius

25.0 m. Calculate

i. the centripetal acceleration of the motorbike,

ii. the time taken for the motorbike to complete one revolution

[ANS: 16 rad/s2, 7.85 s]

3. A ball with a mass of 130 g is swung at the end of a string 93.0 cm in

length. The ball is whirled in a horizontal circle at 4.00 revolutions per second.

i. What is the tension on the string?

ii. What is the tension on the string if the angular velocity increases to 8
revolutions per second?
[ANS: 76.37 N, 305.47 N]
4.

30° 2m

FIGURE 1

FIGURE 1 shows a 0.6 kg ball revolving in a horizontal circle. It is hung

using a cord of length 2 m which makes an angle of 30° with the vertical.

i. Sketch and label all forces on the ball.

ii. Calculate the speed of the ball.
[ANS: DIY, 2.38 m/s]

5. A racing car on flat circular tracks needs friction between the tires and the track
to maintain its circular motion. How much friction is required for twice the
speed?
[ANS: DIY]
