A STUDY ON ROAD ACCIDENTS IN CHENNAI CITY

Abstract:
In spite of many road safety measures and precautions, day by day, the number of accidents
increases every year. There are many reasons for the accidents. The purpose of this study is to
make an analysis on the number of accidents in Chennai city. The study also makes an
investigation on the types of road and the types of vehicle which plays the reason for the
accidents in Chennai during the year 2016. In addition, the study also intends to discuss the
steps to reduce the number of accidents.
Key words: Accidents – Chennai – Causes – Vehicles – Roads.
Introduction:
We often hear of many road accidents in which many people including kids lose their lives
and many gets affected with major and minor injury. There are many reasons for the
accidents. Though there are many precautions given by government and private
organizations, we see the number of accidents in found to be in increasing level. In this paper,
we are trying to make a study on the number of accidents occurring, reasons for the accidents
and the methods to overcome it. Here, we are considering the number of accidents occurring
in the state of Chennai for our consideration.
Data Collected:
Due to the increase in population of the city and to be sophisticated, many uses their own
vehicles for transport. As a result, there is increase in traffic, which in turn makes chance for
accidents sometimes. The data are interpreted with respect to the number of accidents with
fatal, grevious injury, minor injury and non-injury. Table 1 gives the data of the number of
accidents in Chennai city from the year 2006 to the year 2016. Table 2 gives the number of
accidents data based on the types of roads and Table 3 in terms of the types of vehicles.

Data interpretation:
Based on the data in Table 1, we find that there is ups and downs in the number of accidents
in the city. The number of persons involved in the accident is almost found to be more than
the number of accidents. With respect to the fatal, grevious and major injury cases, the
number of persons killed is almost greater than the number of accidents. Figure 1 represents
the graphical representation of the number of accidents with respect to fatal, grevious injury,
major injury and non-injury cases during the year 2006-2017.
Table 2, illustrates the number of accidents based on the types of roads such as national
highways, state highways, other district roads and other village roads. There is no accident
found in the village roads. As in table 1 data, table 2 also shows that number of persons killed
is found to be more than the number of accidents.
Table 3, illustrates the number of accidents based on the type of vehicles. From the data given
below, it shows that the number of accidents is more in the case of two wheelers.
Reasons for road accidents:
There are many reasons for accidents. Here we try to list out a few of them:
Not following the traffic rules
Using mobile phones while travel
Wrong usage of indicators
Chatting with others on road without noticing the vehicles
Unexpected crossing of animals

Drunk and drive


Careless pedestrian crossers
Not using the subways
Opening the right side door of the vehicle to walk out
Precautions to prevent road accidents:
Follow traffic rules
Avoid using mobile phone while driving
Avoid chatting with friends while travel
Carefully observe the road while travel
Educate the people even those who don’t use vehicle
Avoid opening the four wheeler doors on the right hand side
Avoid more number of persons travelling in the vehicles than the number of persons
allotted
Avoid drunk and drive
Pedestrian crossers carefully cross the road
Always open the door of the vehicle from the left side

based on the injury level.

The number of accidents in Chennai city has been discussed. The causes for accidents and the
precautions for avoiding accidents has also been discussed.
