5.8.13 Preparation Before Alignment

The measurement items, which request to turn steering, need to
make some preparation before alignment, as pictured:

138
Operation Introduction

Notice: because these items need to turn steering wheel, so

release the turntable bolts is necessary, but brake pedal
depressor install is must be done! otherwise, side slip occur
when steering wheel turning, will result in serious inaccurate
measuring data.

5.8.14 Preparation Before Adjustment

works are required, as pictured:

139
Operation Introduction

 Remove turntable and sideslip plate bolts to allow the

turntable and sideslip plate to slide in any direction during
adjustment.
 Install brake pedal depressor to brake the wheel, the purpose
is to prevent the wheels from moving on the turntable and
sideslip plate during adjustment, which affect the alignment
parameter detection.
 Adjusting and lock steering wheel is necessary! otherwise, the
steering wheel will not straight forward after adjustment.

140
Maintenance

Appendix A Maintenance
1 Camera’s Maintenance
 The left and right cameras are fixed at the ends of the beam. it
is forbidden to be placed near the source of radiation and heat.
it is strictly prohibited to be placed in an environment close to
explosion, heat, cold and humidity.
 Do not shake and hit the beam.
 Long-Term use will accumulate a certain amount of dust and
oil in front of the camera lens; therefore, regularly scrub with a
neutral detergent or anhydrous alcohol. do not touch the
camera lens with oily or corrosive substances.
 Do not disassemble the camera, tamper internal wiring and
boards to avoid damage to internal components.

2 Target Plate’s Maintenance

 The target fixed shaft should be cleaned regularly and filled
with a small amount of lubricating oil to ensure free access in
clamping fixture.
 Long-Term use will accumulate a certain amount of dust and
oil on the target pattern; therefore, it should be periodically
scrubbed with a neutral detergent or anhydrous alcohol. it is
forbidden to contact the surface of the target pattern with oily
and corrosive substances.

141
Maintenance

 Care should be taken during use, do not throw and falling, so

that not deformed the target pattern, resulting in serious errors
in the measurement data.

3 Clamping fixture’s Maintenance

 Clamping fixture should be regularly cleaned and add a small
amount of lubricant on it to ensure targeted pan can easy
insert to access.
 Use process should be careful, do not throw, so as not to
cause clamping fixture deformation.
 Attention more to the clamping fixture jaws, claws stuck on
wheel rims, should be carefully aligned and do not damage
claws; when need to place the clamping fixture on the ground,
pay attention to the jaw.

142
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

Appendix B Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

1 When Wheel Alignment Required
 The driver has to firmly hold the steering wheel to maintain a
straight-ahead driving.
 Abnormal wear of tires occurred, such as single side wear,
concave-convexity wear and featheriness wear.
 Too heavy or too light steering, or shaking at high-speed
driving.
 When the tire(s), steering joint or shock absorb are replaced.
 When the vehicle is impacted.
 When the vehicle has driven for the first 3000km or 10000km.

2 Alignment Parameters
The wheel alignment is mainly consisting of camber, caster, toe-in,
kingpin inclination, Toe-out on turns, wheelbase difference, tread
difference, etc. they are designed mainly to improve the steering
performance and driving stability of the vehicle, and reduce tire
wear.

2.1 Camber
Camber: see from vehicle's front to rear, the angle between the
center-line of the wheel and the vertical line, outward is positive
and inward is negative, as shown following:

143
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

Camber Unit: degree, rear wheel camber is measured in the

forward straight position. the front wheel camber is measured
according to the manufacturer's instructions (measured when the
two toe values are equal or each individual toe is zero).

2.2 Toe-in
Rear Wheel Toe In (Individual Toe): refers to the angle between
the center-line of the vehicle and the center-line of the wheel, toe
in value will be positive if front wheel of vehicle is in inner side of
vehicle’s center-line , outer side is negative.

144
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

Front wheel toe in(individual toe):refers to the angle between the

geometric axis of the car (thrust line) and the centerline of the
wheel. the value will be positive if front wheel is facing inside of
center extension line of vehicle, otherwise will be negative.
The sum of toe (total toe): the sum of toe of the two wheels on the
left and right sides of the coaxial. the toe is usually measured by
the angle relative to the center of the wheel, but it can also be
expressed in millimeters where the diameter of the rim is known.

2.3 Thrust angle

Thrust angle defined as the angle formed by the angle bisector
(thrust line) of the total toe of the rear wheel of the vehicle and the

145
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

center-line of the vehicle,as pictured:

The thrust angle is defined as positive when the thrust line is

towards left and negative when the line is towards right. if the
thrust angle is not zero, the vehicle will have the side-moving
trend. in this case, adjust the front toe-in of the drive wheels first,
and then adjust the toe-in of driven wheels.

2.4 Castor
Caster is the tilting of the kingpin either forwards or backwards
from vertical, as viewed from side of the vehicle, when the king pin

146
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

is tilted backwards from the vertical, caster is positive, when the

king pin is tilted forwards, caster is negative, as pictured:

The caster ensures the wheel is driven forward, and like the
Kingpin, it also produces a restoring force that causes the wheel
return to straight forward.

2.5 Kingpin Inclination

Kingpin Inclination (KPI/SAI) is the angle of inclination of the king
pin towards the center-line of the vehicle from the vertical, as
pictured:

147
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

Correct Kingpin inclination can equalize the loads applied on

bearings so they can be more durable and the control of steering
is improved.
Without the inclination, the control of the steering may be affected;
further more vehicle weight and the ground counter-force may
cause significant stress in the axle and finally damage the axle.
Correct inclination of king pin is also helpful for the vehicle to
restore its straight-ahead position after steering. kingpin
inclination is determined when the vehicle suspension is designed.
it is not service adjustable.

148
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

2.6 Kingpin Offset / Scrub Radius

Kingpin is the distance: from the joint point of rotation axis and the
ground, to the central point of the tire contact to the ground,
watched from the front of the car.
Kingpin is highly relevant to the camber and castor. adjusting
camber and castor will result in kingpin offset changes.
Kingpin can be negative or positive. it’s positive when the joint
point of rotation axis and the ground is at inner side of the wheel;
otherwise it’s negative.

2.7 Wheel Offset

Wheel Offset is also known as setback. it is the deviation between
connection line between the center point of two wheels at the
same axle, and the vertical line to the thrust line.
It is positive when the right wheel is at the front than left wheel;
otherwise, it’s negative, as pictured:

149
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

2.8 Wheelbase Difference

Wheelbase difference is defined as the angle between the joint
line of the center of two rear wheels and that of the front wheels.
It is positive when distance between the center of the right wheels
is large than that of left wheels; and negative otherwise.
If the tread is available from the Vehicle Datas, then the
wheelbase difference can be also expressed by angle, as
pictured:

150
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

2.9 Lateral Offset

Lateral offset refers to the deviation between central axis of two
wheels at the same side, and the thrust line.
It’s positive when the front wheel is at outer side than the rear
wheel; otherwise, it’s negative, as pictured:

151
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

If the wheelbase of the car is known, the lateral offset can also be
expressed in millimeters or inches.

2.10 Track Width Difference

Track difference is defined as the angle between the joint line of
the ground-contact point of left wheels and that of the right
wheels.
It Is positive when distance between the center of the rear wheels
is large than that of front wheels; and negative otherwise.
If the wheelbases are available from the Vehicle Datas, then the
track difference can be also expressed by angle, as pictured:

152
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

If the front and rear axle's wheelbase are known, the wheel
difference can be expressed in millimeters or inches.

2.11 Toe-Out On Turns

Toe-out on turns is defined as the angle difference of two front
wheels on turning 20°, as pictured:

153
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

In wheel swerving, in turn angle is generally bigger than out-turn

angle for about 2°, it ensures that vehicle could successfully
swerve over with the instantaneous center of rear axle extension
line as center of circle.
Also, the resistance will be stronger when in turn angle is bigger.
vehicle will turn to the side with stronger resistance and make
swerving easier.

2.12 Lock Angles

Front wheel turns to the extreme position to the left or right, the
angle between the center-line of the wheel and the center-line of
the car. maximum steering angle is often used as a basis for
checking the steering trapezoidal arm when turning to the
negative toe.

154
Knowledge of Wheel Alignment

The maximum steering angle actually consists of two data: one is

the maximum steering angle of the inner wheel; the other is the
maximum steering angle of the outer wheel. the maximum
steering angle of a typical car is between 30 and 40 degrees.
If this angle changes, the main impact on the car is: car running
deviation, noise when steering, steering wheel shaking and heavy
steering, etc., in extreme cases, vehicle rollover may occur.
