Into the 21st Century
THE MASJID, the mosque, is without a doubt the central
point of Islam, its primary symbol and functioning
heart.
“Masjid” is the Arabic lingua-franca for a place of
worship. It is derived from the root word “sajada”. This
verb, understood in English as “to prostrate”, gives us
“sujud” – an action of pressing one’s forehead to the
ground during prayer.
In other words, a masjid is a “place of sujud”, a place
where the Muslim submits completely to Allah.
The alternative word for a masjid, “mosque”, is a
Latinised version of masjid. This came via the Romantic
languages of Italian, French and Spanish.
The “q” developed because the Europeans heard the
Egyptian pronunciation of masjid, which was “masgid”.
The Egyptians do not say the Arabic “jeem” syllable,
rather enunciating it as “geem”, a hard sound.
Islam has always been a Deen of practicality,
simplicity and wisdom. This is borne out by the words
of the Prophet (SAW) that the whole world is a masjid.

you are, for all the earth is a masjid,” he said to his

Noble Companions. Apart from all the earth being
deemed a sacred space for our prayer, Allah – via
the noble Prophet (SAW) – directly tells us to respect
our environment. The wisdom here is that if Creation
is sanctified, it behoves us not to pollute or damage
it. There is no blessing praying with dirt, rubbish and
environmental degradation around us.
Obviously, for practical and social reasons, masjid
development over the past 1,444 years has had to
be expressed in wood, stone and mortar. The Prophet
(SAW) helped to build the first masjid, Masjid al-Quba,
when he came to Madinah after fleeing from Makkah.
The purpose was to bring people together, in his case
the ansar (the Madinah locals) and the muhajirun
(the Makkan migrants) to grow the new faith of Islam.
Centrality of purpose was found in the actual building
process of the masjid, and unity of community was
created by the worship space, which focused on
tawhid, the oneness of Allah.
Later on, the masjid in the Prophet’s (SAW) courtyard in
Madinah – a very basic structure – would serve multiple
social purposes, but primarily one of communal
worship. It was from here that the Prophet (SAW) would
meet delegations, and build a society informed by
Qur’anic values such as justice and knowledge. The
masjid became an extremely powerful institution. This
not only because believers would meet communally
five times a day for the daily prayers, but because
it would build a strong community fully tuned into its
needs.
In addition, the masjid developed into a centre of
learning. Many famous madrasahs in Muslim cities
such as Baghdad, Damascus, Jerusalem, Cairo and
Fez were attached to masjids.

century when the Ummayad Khalifahs constructed
places of worship over old Byzantine ones such as in
Damascus, and built new ones in Jerusalem.

Called a mihrab, the Ummayads created the first
decorative prayer niches, adopted from ancient
Jewish and Coptic worship sites, but refashioned

The first minaret, a tower dedicated to broadcasting
the call to prayer efficiently over the rooftops, was built
in Egypt and became a standard for all masajid, with
various styles evolving over the centuries – from the
pencil-thin Ottoman columns, to the fat Uzbek towers
and to the twisting Samarkand cones.
While the masajid have always reflected the artistry of
those in power – such as the Ummayads, the ‘Abbasids,
the Fatimids, the Timurids, the Mughals and the
Ottomans – they have all enjoyed central decorative
elements like ablution fountains, patterned tilework,
arabesques and Qur’anic calligraphy, mirroring the

been the unifying emblem of Islam, the centre from
which everything evolves. Today, there are over 2
billion Muslims in the world, many of them migrating
across oceans and continents, and building new and
modern masajid wherever they settle. Significantly,
not much has changed in sum and substance, for
today’s masjid – whether in Berlin or Bukhara – serves
Al-Jabbar Masjid, Bandung.
