• The above pictures are of the inside of acoustic gui-

tars.
• As the strings are either plucked, picked or
strummed, the sound reverberates inside the cham-
ber below it. There is a soundboard and bracings
that are set in a certain way in order to emphasise
certain sound profiles.
• I like the inside of the acoustic guitar as it looks like
the inside of a fancy spa hotel!

• The above picture shows all the pieces of the acous-

tic guitar. It is important that you study and learn
these names. In order to be a better player, you need
to understand what it is you are playing.
• Take the time each week to look over this diagram
and learn the names of the guitar pieces.

• The above picture shows how the electric guitar is

different to an acoustic guitar. You need to plug an
electric guitar into an amplifier in order to get sound,
as they have pickups attached to them rather than a
soundboard and soundhole. They are thinner as they
do not have a sound chamber for the sound to re-
verberate around.
Between the guitar and the amplifier most electric
guitar players add pedals that they can use to make
the guitar sound differently, for example distortion
and delay.

• It is important that you learn how to hold a guitar

plectrum, as this can save your fingers, and also im-
prove your playing.
• The above pictures show you the four ways you can
hold a plectrum. I use the pad to pad method myself,
but you can try the other three methods, and see
which is the best method for you.

• In order to tune the guitar you need to turn the tun-

er either clockwise or anti-clockwise until the string is
in tune.
• Turning it clockwise makes the string go higher in
pitch
• Turning it anti-clockwise makes the string go lower
in pitch
• One method you could use to tune the guitar is to
tune the first string, and then using the diagram
above you can tune each string in turn.
• Starting from the lowest string, the E string, move to
fret 5 and hold it down with your finger. Play that
note and it will be the note for the next string, which
is A. Tune the A string to that note, and carry on
down the fretboard until you reach the 4th string.
• On the fourth string you fret the 4th string as that
gives you the B note you need for the 5th string.
• For the final string you need to fret the 5th fret on
the 5th string.
• This is a complicated method, but it does allow you
to tune the guitar if you can get the E note and have
no other method to tune the guitar.
