OPERATION MANUAL

‘ENKAY’ LOS ANGELES ABRASION TESTER

‘ENKAY’ LOS ANGELES ABRASION TESTER is designed for

determining the abrasion value of coarse aggregates.

The machine comprises the following:-

 A hollow steel cylinder mounted on a sturdy frame on ball bearings

capable of rotating about its axis in a horizontal position.

 A detachable shelf fitted inside the cylinder at a distance of 1250mm

from the opening measured along the circumference in the direction of

rotation.

 A motor with reduction gear, which runs the drum at 30-33 rpm.

 A tray.

 A Revolution Counter.

 Abrasive charge consisting of 12 steel balls approximately 48mm dia

and each weighing between 390 & 445 g

 Suitable for operation on 440V, SOHz,3 phase supply.

The abrasive charge, depending upon the grading of the test specimen

shall be as per table given in the following page :

TEST SAMPLE

The test sample shall consist of clean aggregate which has been dried in

an oven at 105 to 110oC to substantially constant weight and shall conform

to one of the gradings shown in table below. The grading or gradings used

shall be those most nearly representing the aggregate furnished for the

work.

The test sample and the abrasive charge shall be placed in the Los Angeles

abrasion testing machine and the machine rotated at a speed of 20 to 33

rev/min. For grading A, B,C and D, the machine shall be rotated for 500

revolutions. The machine shall be so driven and so counter-balanced as to

maintain a substantially uniform peripheral speed. If angle is used as the

shelf, the machine shall be rotated ins such a direction that the charge is

caught on the outside surface of the angle. At the completion of the test,

the material shall be discharged from the machine and a preliminary

separation of the sample made on a sieve coarser than the 1.70mm IS

Sieve. The finer portion shall then be sieved on a 1.70mm IS Sieve in the

manner described in 2.3 of Part I of this standard.

The material coarser than the 1.70mm IS Sieve shall be washed dried in an

over at 105 to 110C to a substantially constant weight, and accurately

weighed to the nearest gram.

The difference between the original weight and the final weight of the test

sample shall be expressed as a percentage of the original weight of the

test sample. This value shall be reported as the percentage or water.

OPERATION PROCEDURE

 Place the machine on a solid, leveled surface.

 Provide 415 Volts, 3 Phase, 50 Hz AC Supply to the machine from the

Mains.

 Remove the lid of the hollow drum.

 Place the specimen according to the Grade given in the table above.

 Place the number of steel balls (Abrasive Charge) as specified in the

above Table.

 Close the lid and secure the four nuts tightly.

 Switch ON the machine for the hollow drum to rotate.

 When the number of revolutions reaches 33, switch off the machine.

 Bring the lid of the hollow drum such that when opened, the specimen

falls on the tray provided underneath.

 Collect the specimen and after sieving it, weigh the specimen to

determine the weight of the specimen abraded
