What is
Orton-Gillingham Approach?
• is a powerful approach to teaching reading and spelling that uses
instruction that is multisensory, sequential, incremental, cumulative,
individualized, phonics-based, and explicit.
• Though often touted primarily as an instructional method for children with
dyslexia and other learning challenges, the OG approach helps make
reading and spelling easy for all children.

Historical Background
Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham
• The Orton-Gillingham Approach takes its name from two
pioneers in the field of dyslexia.
• They recognized that traditional teaching methods in the
early 20th century were not effective for students with
dyslexia.
• They developed a structured and systematic approach that
incorporated multi-sensory techniques to engage multiple
pathways in the brain and facilitate learning.
Who were
Orton and Gillingham?
The brainchild of Samuel Torrey Orton,
a neuropsychiatrist and pathologist, and
Anna Gillingham, an educator and
psychologist, their philosophy is based
on extensive studies of children with
language processing difficulties like
dyslexia. Together they developed a
teaching approach to help these
children and mentored teachers

Samuel Torrey Orton
(1879-1948)
• pioneer in the study and understanding of

dyslexia
• studied numerous children with language
processing issues and eventually developed
teaching principles designed to help these

Dyslexia
