What is
Orton-Gillingham Approach?

Orton-Gillingham Approach
TO READING & SPELLING
Orton-Gillingham Approach
• is a powerful approach to teaching reading and spelling that uses
instruction that is multisensory, sequential, incremental, cumulative,
individualized, phonics-based, and explicit.
• Though often touted primarily as an instructional method for children with
dyslexia and other learning challenges, the OG approach helps make
reading and spelling easy for all children.

Orton-Gillingham Approach
• It is the 'gold standard' approach for remediating and teaching children
with Dyslexia who struggle in reading, writing, and spelling, despite
having average to above-average intelligence.
• It is an approach, not a method, program, or system. It was developed
by Dr. Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham in the 1930s.

Orton-Gillingham Approach
• This approach emphasizes the importance of designing individualized
lessons based on children's learning needs, current skill levels, and
individual strengths and weaknesses.
• The skill areas taught directly and explicitly include phonemic
awareness, alphabet skills, letter-sound correspondence, decoding,
phonics, spelling, reading, fluency, morphology, vocabulary,
comprehension, handwriting, and writing.

Historical Background
Orton-Gillingham Approach

Orton-Gillingham Approach
TO READING & SPELLING
Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham
• The Orton-Gillingham Approach takes its name from two
pioneers in the field of dyslexia.
• They recognized that traditional teaching methods in the
early 20th century were not effective for students with
dyslexia.
• They developed a structured and systematic approach that
incorporated multi-sensory techniques to engage multiple
pathways in the brain and facilitate learning.

Orton and Gillingham?

Orton-Gillingham Approach
TO READING & SPELLING
The brainchild of Samuel Torrey Orton,
a neuropsychiatrist and pathologist, and
Anna Gillingham, an educator and
psychologist, their philosophy is based
on extensive studies of children with
language processing difficulties like
dyslexia. Together they developed a
teaching approach to help these
children and mentored teachers
accordingly. Orton-Gillingham Approach

Samuel Torrey Orton
(1879-1948)

• pioneer in the study and understanding of

dyslexia
• studied numerous children with language
processing issues and eventually developed
teaching principles designed to help these
children learn language more effectively

The first Orton-Gillingham manual was published in
1935.

The manual, originally called Remedial Training for

Children with Specific Disability in Reading, Spelling,
and Penmanship, was co-authored by Anna Gillingham
and Bessie T. Stillman. It formed the backbone of what
is now the OG approach and has made a significant
impact on thousands of students for over 80 years.

One of the hallmarks of the Orton-Gillingham Approach is its emphasis on
multisensory instruction. This means that learners are actively engaged in
using their senses—seeing, hearing, touching—to reinforce their
understanding of reading concepts. For example, they may trace letters while
saying their sounds or use manipulative materials to build words. By involving
multiple senses, the approach enhances learning and memory retention.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach follows a structured and sequential teaching
order. Concepts are taught in a logical progression, building upon previously
mastered skills. Starting with the fundamentals, such as letter recognition and
phonemic awareness, learners gradually progress to more complex skills like
decoding and reading fluency. This step-by-step approach ensures a solid
foundation for future learning.

Unlike traditional classroom settings, the Orton-Gillingham Approach
recognizes that learners with reading difficulties require individualized
instruction. Each learner receives personalized support and attention,
allowing the teacher to target specific areas of weakness and build on
strengths. By tailoring instruction to the unique needs and learning
style of each individual, progress is maximized.

Phonological awareness, or the ability to recognize and manipulate the
sounds of language, is a crucial component of the Orton-Gillingham
Approach. Learners are taught to identify individual sounds (phonemes),
understand the relationship between letters and sounds, and blend sounds
together to form words. This strong foundation in phonological awareness
helps improve reading and spelling skills.
Orton-Gillingham Approach
TO READING
Phonics instruction, teaching the relationship between letters and
sounds, is a core element of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Learners are
guided through systematic phonics lessons, starting with basic letter-sound
correspondences and gradually progressing to more complex spelling
patterns. By explicitly teaching phonics, learners acquire the tools to
decode and spell words independently.
Orton-Gillingham Approach
TO READING
A key aspect of reading fluency is the ability to break words into syllables
and recognize syllable patterns. In the Orton-Gillingham Approach,
learners are taught syllabication rules and strategies to decode unfamiliar
words. By understanding how words are structured, learners gain
confidence in tackling longer words and improve their overall reading
fluency.
