1.2 Vow
wel sound
ds
1. a- (shoort a-: betweeen duck andd dock). The a- is found in
i words succh as pak (parcel, suit), and
plat (flatt).
Note i: There
T is en esssential diffeerence in meeaning betweeen such worrds as plat (fflat) and plaaat
(picture, record), ma ak (tame) annd maak (to make), etc. This
T differennce is determ mined by thee
differencce between th he short and the long a- sounds. It iss therefore veery importannt to distinguuish
clearly beetween thesee sounds. Miispronunciattion may, in may cases, lead to serioous
misunderrstandings. Here
H are a feew more exam mples: tak is
i branch in English, butt taak meanss
task; man n has the samme meaningg as man in English
E but maan
m meanss moon.
If the lastt syllable off a word is noot stretched, the plural iss often formeed by addingg an -s, as inn
English: thus the plurral of tafel (table)
( is tafe
fels. The plurral of raam (window) is ramen
(windowss). The last wordw consistts of two syllables: ra- and
a -men. Thhe second a-- is dropped
5
because the
t a- is the last letter off the syllablee. If the last letter
l of a syyllable is a voowel, we sayy that
that syllaable is open: ra- is thus an
a open syllaable and the single a- is pronouncedd like an aa- (the
long aa-)). There are, in other words two wayys in which a long vowell sound can be b formed: byb
doublingg the vowel concerned,
c egg., aa- as in kaas or havving it at the end of a syllable, as in
ramen.
To determmine the num mber of syllaables that maake up a givven Dutch woord, it is bestt to pronounnce it
slowly: ra-men.
r Agaain, if the lasst letter of a syllable is a vowel, suchh as an a-, thhis vowel is
pronouncced as thoug gh there weree two a's: raaa-men. Thiss spelling (i.ee. with two a's a and a hypphen)
is not norrmal and is here
h only used to indicatte that the word w concerned consists of o more thann one
syllable. Words like praten (to taalk), betalen n (to pay), gapen (to yaw wn) and haleen (to fetch) also
contain open
o syllablees (pra-ten, be-ta-len, ga-pen,
g ha-leen).
Note iv: As
A in the case of the a-, o- is pronouunced oo- if the syllable in which it appears
a is oppen,
such as inn bomen. Iff this word iss split into tw
wo syllables,, we get bo-m
men. This word
w is thereffore
pronouncced boo-men n, but may not
n be spelledd this way. We W find this situation in words like
wonen (tto live), dozeen (boxes), symbolen
s (sy
symbols), probleem (prooblem), and over
o (over). (do-
zen, sym
m-bo-len, pro o-bleem, o-vver).

Exercise 7. Read the following words
w aloud: gek, lekker,, best, vet, wetten,

b
erg, ontddekken.
6. ee- (loong ee-: moree or less likee the Englishh ay- as in saay, crazy, etcc. but withouut the glide
towards i).i It is found
d in Dutch words
w such as
a veel (muchh, many) andd steen (stonne, brick). If e- is
in an opeen syllable, as
a in stegen (ste-gen), thhe word is prronounced sttee-gen, but never spelleed
that way.. This is alsoo the situatioon in words like
l breken (to break), weten w (to know), vergeteen
(to forgett) and spelenn (to play).
Note v: The
T explanattion of the diifference in pronunciatioon of e- and ee- only appplies to wordds in
which theese sounds receive
r the sttress. If the e-
e sound is unstressed,
u such as in woords like lop
pen
(to walk)), bedanken (to thank) and
a also in de (the), the e- e is pronounnced as in sim
milar words in

Articles:
Dutch has three articles, two definite articles, de and het(the), and one indefinite article een(a or
an).
De is used before masculine and feminine nouns and het before neuter nouns. We usually talk
about de-words and het- words. There is no way to tell from a given word whether it is one or the
other. It is advisable therefore to learn the article together with the new noun that is being learned.
Two useful rules may be worth remembering:
I. ALL PLURALS ARE DE-WORDS: although `huis' is a het-word (het huis), the plural is `de
huizen', etc.
ii. ALL SINGULAR DIMINUTIVES ARE HET-WORDS: although `tafel' (table) is a de-word
(de tafel), the diminutive is `het tafeltje', etc.
Note: Plurals take preference over diminutives, so we say not only `de huisjes' but also `de
tafeltjes', etc.

3.7 Saturday at the van Dam's
Weak Verbs:
The verb `werken'(to work) can serve as a model for a group of so-called weak verbs which
are all conjugated the same way and form the various tenses on the same principles. These
verbs are called `weak' because the stem of the verb, in this case `werk', never changes.
werken(to work)
luisteren(to listen)
19
1 ik luister ik luisterde ik heb geluisterd
Words that have a k, f, s, ch, or p before the `-en' in the infinitive, such as `werken' above,
form the Past Tense and Perfect Tenses by means of a t; all other weak verbs take a d.
Note: The same happens in spoken form in English words: a t is heard in `worked' and
`chopped' although these words are spelled with a d. In words like `listened' and `lived' on
the other hand, a d sound is heard. An easy way to remember which words take t is to form a
word of the letters mentioned above, namely KoFSCHiP.
Other verbs in this group are: wandelen(to stroll, to go for a walk), poetsen(to brush),
fietsen(to bike), branden (to burn), winkelen(to go shopping), antwoorden(to answer),
regenen(to rain), tekenen(to draw), oefenen(to practice, to exercise), and zeilen(to sail).
Exercise 31. Conjugate the words in the previous paragraph in the same way as in the
examples above.
A verb which is also `weak' because the stem doesn't change, is, for example, `wonen'(to live,
to reside). Words like `wonen' are here put in a different group because of the difference in
spelling.
wonen
20
1 wij wonen wij woonden wij hebben gewoond
The stem of the verb `branden' ends on a `d' (brand). When `de(n)' is added for the past
tense, there will be two d's.
Branden:
Other verbs that belong to the same group are, among others, leren(to learn), maken(to
make), smaken(to taste), spelen(to play), parkeren(to park), horen(to hear), koken(to cook or
boil), lenen(to lend or borrow), plagen(to tease), halen(to fetch), and menen(to mean).

The verbs `komen' (to come), `gaan'(to go), `worden'(to become), `gebeuren'(to happen),
`zijn', and certain other verbs ,if they express motion to a destination, such as `fietsen',
`zwemmen'(to swim), `rijden'(to ride), `vertrekken'(to leave or depart), `lopen'(to walk), etc.
take the helping verb `zijn'.

5.5 A letter from America
`en', `maar', `want', and `of' are called coordinating conjunctions. When these words serve to link
sentences, the word order of the sentence remains the same, as in English:
Mnr. Van Dam werkt in een kantoor maar Moeder werkt thuis.
47
5.2 Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating Conjunctions:
All conjunctions in Dutch, except the four above, are subordinating conjunctions, which means
that the clause which they introduce is subordinate to the main clause in the sentence and this
implies that the word order in that clause undergoes a change. This distinguishes Dutch from
English and thus constitutes a major problem for English speaking persons learning Dutch. The
most important rule to remember is that the verb (or verbs) in the subordinate clause always
go(es) to the end of that clause.
Mnr. Van Dam werkt vandaag niet omdat het zondag is. or

Exercise 50. Join the following sentences beginning first with the main clause, then with the

5.3 Verbs expressing motion or change of state
The verbs komen (to come), gaan (to go), worden (to become), gebeuren (to happen), zijn, and
certain other verbs, if they express motion to a destination, such as fietsen, zwemmen (to swim),
rijden (to ride), vertrekken (to leave or depart), lopen (to walk), etc. take the helping verb zijn.
Whether you should use Hebben or Zijn as an auxiliary is not always easy to determine. It may
help if you remember that, activities get hebben, and situations get zijn. In this context ‘situation’
can cover movement to a specific place or a change of state. However, problems may occur if a
verb can indicate both an activity and a situation.
An activity
Wij hebben gitaar gespeeld. We (have) played the guitar.

The verb zullen(will) expresses the future tense and can also serve as a modal verb, i.e.
expressing mood.
If a modal or other auxiliary(helping) verb is used in the sentence, this verb takes the place of the
main verb as the finite verb in the sentence (usually in second position after the subject), and the
main verb goes to the end of the sentence in infinitive form.

8.2 Compound verbs --- Compound Verbs:
Compound verbs in Dutch usually consist of a preposition and a verb. A verb like `opzoeken'
means and functions almost the same as the English verb `to look up', for instance a word in a
dictionary. In English the two parts are considered as two different words while in Dutch they
form a new (compound) word.
The stress is always on the first, the preposition, part. When used in a sentence as the finite
verb, the two parts are split, the verb part taking the place the verb normally takes, i.e.
after the subject, while the preposition goes to the end of the clause.
When an auxiliary word is used, the whole verb goes to the end of the clause:
aankomen to arrive
uitleggen to explain
aantrekken to put on
aankleden to dress
uitnodigen to invite
voorstellen to introduce
68
Exercise 61. Introduce the modal verb given in parentheses into the following sentences:
Exercise 62. Rewrite the following sentences omitting the modal verb:
35 people'.(Er waren
35 mensen.) and `it' as in `I will think about it'. (Ik zal erover denken.) `It' is translated into
`er' whenever it is combined with a preposition, eg. `about it' above.
More examples: Look at it! Kijk ernaar! (`er' + naar) I like it. Ik houd ervan. (`er' + van) Don't
talk about it. Praat er niet over. She is stuck with it. Ze zit ermee.

singular as well as plural objects, it must be translated with either `this' or `these' in English:
het boek : dit boek is van mij. (this book belongs to me.) de pen : deze pen is van mij. (this
pen belongs to me.) de boeken: deze boeken zijn van mij. (these books belong to me.)
`dat' also agrees with `het' but is used to indicate objects that are far, like `that' in English.
`die' also agrees with `de' but is used to indicate objects that are far, like `those' in English:
het boek : dat boek is van mij. (that book belongs to me.) de pen : die pen is van mij. (that
pen belongs to me.) de boeken: die boeken zijn van mij. (those books belong to me.)

1. My uncle and aunt live in that house. (het huis)
2. This girl is my cousin and this boy is my little brother. (de jongen)
3. The car sosts 25 000. (to cost - kosten) (de auto)

7. Does your father work in this room or in that office? (de kamer), (het kantoor)
8. That bakery (bakkerij) has very good bread.
9. Where did you buy this meat (het vlees)?
10. When did Wim buy that nice bike? (de fiets)
A Demonstrative Pronoun used as the subject of a sentence does not have a plural form:
Dit is mijn boek. Dit zijn mijn boeken. (This is my book. These are my books.)
Dat is ons huis. Dat zijn onze vrienden. (That is our house. Those are our friends).

9.2 Prepositional Compounds ---- Prepositional Compounds:
`er', `waar', `hier', and `daar', combined with a preposi- tion, are called Prepositional
Compounds.
waarop - on what (waar + preposition = what + preposition) erop - on it (er " = it + " ) hierop -
on this (hier + " = this + " ) daarop - on that (daar + " = that + " )
NB. Compare older English construction like: whereafter, whereupon, therewith, hereafter,
etc.
In spoken Dutch these compounds are normally split into their two components:
Waar zit je op? (What are you sitting on?) Ik zit er niet op. (I am not sitting on it) Ik zit hier
niet op. (I am not sitting on this) Ik zit daar nooit op. (I never sit on that)
80
3. I am looking at this.
4. He is paying for it. (voor)
5. Let's not talk about it. (over)
6. We always read from it. (uit)
7. The book is lying on it. (op)
8. I cannot write with this. (met/mee)
9. We will think about it.
10. He asked for it.
11. What were they listening to (naar)?
12. What are you playing with?
13. Do you always eat from that?
14. After that we went home. (na)
15. What is (goes) this book about?
16. About ships. That's what it is about.
17. I cannot live with it.
18. Do I have to work with this?
19. I know nothing about that.
20. What are you sitting on?
eg.: Waar laat jij je haar knippen? - Where do you have your hair cut? (`Laten' can also mean
`to let': Laat me gaan! - Let me go!)
81
met z'n (vijven, tweeen, etc.) - with five, two (persons), etc.
If the main verb in a given sentence is `gaan' or `komen', these may be, and usually are,
omitted if an auxiliary verb is used in the sentence, eg. Ik wil naar huis (gaan); Wij moeten
mee (komen); Zij mag niet (meegaan - go along), etc.
een goeie (goede) - a good one. The substantive formed of an adjective does not require a
noun in Dutch. Also: een grote, een mooie, een gele (a yellow one), etc.
`goeie' is the colloquial, but very common, form of `goede'. In the same way: `rooie' for
`rode' (red), `ouwe' for `oude'.
Degrees of Comparison in Dutch are formed in much the same way as in English:
o.a. (onder andere) - among others d.w.z. (dat wil zeggen) - that means (that is to say)

deel van het Spaanse rijk onder Karel V. Zijn zoon, Philips II, regeerde
Nederland. Willem van Oranje was zoiets als George Washington: hij
leidde de eerste vrije provincies tot de onafhankelijkheid.

Wim: Nee, nog niet. Misschien wordt het later een polder. Een deel is nu al
polder. Dat kan je ook hier op de atlas zien. Een polder is land dat
vroeger zee was. Grote delen van Nederland waren vroeger zee. Het
was de Franse filosoof Descartes die gezegd heeft: `God heeft de
wereld gemaakt maar de Nederlanders hebben Nederland gemaakt!'

10.3 Something about culture
Dutch does not have an equivalent of the English Progressive Form. Constructions like We are
talking, They were playing, etc. are usually translated with Dutch constructions in the Present
Indefinite Tense: We praten, Ze speelden, etc. If it is essential to point out that a certain action
is or was taking place at a specific time, the continuity of the action can be expressed in the
following ways:
i. By means of one of the four verbs: liggen, zitten, staan or lopen, always followed by
te, e.g.:
ii. By means of the construction aan het followed by the verb in the infinitive form, e.g.:

Lesson 11
Lesson 11
11.1 Diminutives
11.2 New words 11
11.3 A healthy spirit in a healthy body
The use of the diminutive form is much more common in Dutch than it is in English. In principle
its function is to indicate that an object is small. More abstractly, it can be used to express
contempt, appreciation, admiration or love. The intended meaning can only be concluded from
the context. The word huisje (little house) can serve as an example of the various functions of
the diminutive form:
750 000! To express appreciation : Ik ben erg blij met ons huisje!
The basic form of the diminutive suffix is je. This is the form used if the noun ends on -p, -k, -t,
-d, -g, and -s, as in:
boek boekje
etc.
95
rivier riviertje river
In some cases the consonant must be doubled for the usual reason of pronunciation, as in:
The -g in words ending in the unstressed suffix -ing becomes -k and then -je is added as in:
Example:
Het hondje knauwde (chewed) op het beentje (bone) bij een boompje voor het woninkje
(house) van het mannetje.
96
Nouns that have irregular plural forms, usually have irregular diminutive forms as well. The
plural of schip (ship) is schepen; the diminutive is scheepje. In a similar way the plural of gat
(hole) is gaten and the diminutive is gaatje. Also:
ring ringetje
jongen jongetje
or may form the diminutive form in more than one way, (the second form being more or less
archaic) such as:
meisje in the sense of girl can be considered as having only a diminutive form; the noun meid
(maid) has become practically obsolete.
