GENESIS OF THADOU-KUKI CONCLICTS

The Thadou tribe in Karbi Anglong District of Assam has been migrated from the
neighbouring states, i.e Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura in the year 1915
AD. Though they are included in the 'kuki' Sub tribe under the scheduled Tribes
list 1950, they are not Kuki as the origin of the THADOU, its culture language and
custom date backs to 504 BC
For the last several years, they have been faithfully preserving their identity,
language culture and custom but in the year 1991 onwards some self interested of
kuki the lunkim and Lenthang group in particular recruited some militants in the
name of Chin kuki resistance force (C.K.R.F) they have been sent to North cachar
hills District with sophisticated weapons sent by Rev Dr T. Lunkim administrative
secretary Kuki Christian Church INDIA.
They have proclaimed that there will be one nation – ‘Kuki’ and there shall be one
language, I,e,. Kuki language. Accordingly they have started their mean social
activities in N.C. Hills district by changing the proposed THADOU PROGRAMME in the
A.I.R. Haflong into Kuki programme broadcasting in THADOU language.
Again the militants have been inducted into Karbi Anglong district with
sophisticated weapons in the year 1992 in the name and style of Kuki National Army
(KNA). After observing carefully their activities the THADOU TIBE Council Karbi
Anglong district Assam has taken up series of steps to curb their activities by
organising vulunteers with licenced arms available with them.
As the clash between the two groups started in full swing to achieve their
respective aims, now reached both groups to the point of no return. As a result
many lives, movable and immovable properties have been lost.
The Thadou Tribe Council has reported the matter to district administration since
the beginning and even after taking sufficient steps to avoid the omen of the
destruction, the district authority has shown a deaf ear towards the Thadou Tribe
Council thus resulting lost of many lives, movable and immovable properties.
The last incident has been taken place at MONGJANG on 21.06.1993 at 1500 hrs in
which 57 houses were set ablazed, 3 youths lost their lives, 1 aged woman sustained
bullet injury and 1 youth and 1 teenage have been admitted at Diphu Civil Hospital
for treatment, followed by burning down of Bolsol and Phailong villages.
The district authority has been approached to install police pickets atleast in
three different villages and requested to extend the immediate relief the refugees
stranded in DIPHU and MANJA but all in vain.
In the month of April’93 the Thadou Tribe Council has submitted a memorandum to the
Secretary, Deptt. of Home Affairs requesting him to take remedial step. No action
yet has been taken. Similarly, the name of the said militants alongwith their
sophisticated weapons in their possession and their petronizers have been submitted
to the district authority, but till date NOT a single militants alonwith their arms
and leaders has yet been arrested. On the contrary, 11 (eleven) Thadou Tribe
Council volunteers arrested and they have still in the police remand.
