Thales
Thales
Thales Australia’s business activities in the Defence area require Thales Australia
personnel on many of its projects to have access to:
• National Security Classified material from Australian and Foreign Governments and
therefore for many positions within Thales in Australia the ability to obtain an
Australian Security clearance is essential; and
• United States information and documentations which are subject to the International
Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITARs); this information is generally known as ITAR
material.
The United States Govt insists that ITAR material is only accessed by Australian citizens
whose original place of birth is not included under clause 126.1 Prohibited exports and sales to
certain countries of the ITARs, US citizens, approved Dual Nationals (people who are
Australian citizens and who hold a current passport from another country/ies) and approved
Third Country Foreign Nationals (people who are not Australian citizens at all) that are
employed by Thales Australia.
• reject applications for employment on projects which use ITAR material based on the
applicants citizenship or residency status;
restrict the internal transfer of employees to specific projects which use ITAR material;
and
• require employees to wear a identification badge to indicate whether they can access
ITAR material and/or Security Classified information
Thales Australia has obtained exemptions under the relevant Anti-discrimination Acts/Equal
Opportunity Legislation in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia to the extent
necessary to do the above.
Thales Australia has sought and continues to seek to mitigate the effects of the ITAR
requirements on its employees and potential employees by seeking authorization from the
United States Govt to Dual Nationals, with approved second citizenship, and Third Country
Nationals, from approved countries, to access ITAR material on projects where ITAR material
is utilized.
The decision as to what countries are acceptable is at the discretion of the United States
Department of State and may change from time to time. A list of the countries to which US
ITAR controlled material is currently prohibited is available at the US State Department
