Introduction
The researchers are students of North Ruimveldt Secondary School. They are
collecting research data for their School Based Assessment objectives. The researcher would
like to determine the effects of sugar sweetened beverages on students’ health of North
Ruimveldt Secondary School as although the excessive consumption of sugar is known to be
linked to diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, it has been observed that
students of North Ruimveldt Secondary continue to consume mass amounts of excessively
sweetened beverages. This has cited concern for the health of students of North Ruimveldt as
study conducted in 2007 support the claim for the negative impact of SSB (Sugar Sweetened
Beverages) on student’s health, with the strongest support for overweight/obesity risk, dental
caries and memory and cognitive deficiencies. This rise in the consumption of sugar
sweetened beverages among colleagues in their class led the researcher to select this topic, to
determine and conclude the effects of sugar sweetened beverages on students' health. The
knowledge gained from this School Based Assessment will enable the researcher to have a
greater understanding of their topic. It will also enable the researcher to develop their
research and writing skills.
Statement of the Problem: The excessive consumption of highly sweetened beverages has
many negative effects on student’s health.
Research Objective: To determine the effects of excessively sweetened beverages on the
health of students.

Methodology:. The investigation took place in Georgetown, at the North Ruimveldt

Secondary School. The investigation was conducted to understand firsthand just how SSB
affects student’s health. For this investigation the sample used was of the North Ruimveldt
Secondary School population which is 450 students; we used 60 students to conduct the
experiment and came to our conclusion. The data collection instrument utilized was online
questionnaires, which is easier and less costly to distribute. The method of sampling used was
the systematic sampling method, this included the selection of a random from a list we
generated by selecting a compilation of 60 random students from form 1-5. We then selected
the actual participants by picking an individual every 2 persons until we reached the “30”
mark. The systematic sapling method ensured un-biasness as it used a random set of
individuals. The first set of participants selected using only the subgroup of grade/ form, from
these subgroups (10) members from each class was selected. The final selection was made by
selecting an individual from the list every (2) persons until we obtained (30) participants. For
our data collection method, we used a quantitative method. This method was selected as it
seeks to build a general knowledge of behavior and other phenomena across different
environments and people. Despite its advantages, one limitation that it has is that it
oversimplify or ignore the meanings, motivations, emotions, or experiences of the
participants or subjects causing you to overlook more relevant observations.

Presentation of Data
Age of respondents

Figure 1 is a bar chart showing the age group of respondents. 5 students were between the
ages of 11-13, 8 being 14-15 and majority being 16-18 years of age. It is seen that the mode
group was the age group of 16-18.

Figure 2 is a pie chart illustrating the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages in North Ruimveldt
Secondary. The options were Yes or No, as to if they consume SSB or not. 2 students said no while
the majority of 27 said yes.

Total consumption of sugar sweetened beverages on a weekly basis

Figure 3 is a bar chart depicting the total consumption of sugar sweetened beverages on a weekly
basis by students. The options was varied in amounts. 7 students picked the amount of 1-2, 9 students
picked 2-3, 4 choose 3-4, 6 choose 4-5, 0 students picked 5+ while the remaining 7 students choose 0
beverages on a weekly basis.
The influence of the factors towards the consumption of SSB.

Figure 4 is a pie chart depicting the influence of factors towards the consumption of sugar sweetened
beverages. The option was Yes or No as to whether certain factors influence the consumption of SSB
or not. 21 students choose Yes while the remaining 8 choose No.
Factors that influence the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages

Figure 5 is a pie chart showing factors that influence the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages
whether it be consuming less or consuming more. 8 students picked social influences for consuming
more, 8 choose a hot environment for consuming more, 2 choose dietary preferences for consuming
less while the remaining 11 choose the absence of other beverages for consuming more
Partaking of physical exercising

Figure 6 is a pie chart showing students’ participation in physical exercise. 21 said yes, they
do exercise while the remaining 8 said no, they don’t exercise.

Total number of students with sugar related diseases.

Figure 7 is a pie chart showing total number of students with sugar related illness. 27 students
said no, they don’t have such, while the minority of 2 said yes.

Analysis and Interpretation of Data

My research objective was to determine the effects of SSB on students’ health, and the data
collected was not only sufficient but reliable to utilize. It is seen that the average consumption
of SSB per week by students is 3-4 with students spending an average of 1500$ per week to
purchase SSB, citing the absence of other beverages and the hot climate as an engaging factor
for SSB. Furthermore, though there are general effects associated with excessive
consumption of SSB like diabetes and obesity, it is shown that more than 95% of students
seemed to have not experienced any negative effects at all, even those who have family
members with sugar related illness. In addition, a total of 72% of students exercise regularly
but an article by simplygym.net states that “Regular exercise can help your body process
sugar in a healthier way, but no matter how much exercise you do, too much sugar will be
bad for you”. Therefore, physical exercise can mitigate effects of moderate consumption of
SSB but not excessive consumption. Hence, the amount of SSB consumed by students is of
moderate consumption and the practice of exercising regularly diminishes the chance of
negative effects. This is seen with students of North Ruimveldt who seem to consume SSB on
a regular basis but hardly have any negative effects as a result.

Conclusion
It is now conclusive that the effects of the excessive consumption of SSB ranges from
diabetes to obesity but within the student population of North Ruimveldt Secondary, there is
minimal affected students, with this being because of moderate consumption of sugar
sweetened beverages and adequate exercise.
