Tutor: Vincent Elikem Dzah Subject: Science

Date: Sep. 26 - Sep. 30 References: Cambridge Primary Science;
Cambridge Primary Science workbook
Year: 6 Pages: 12 – 18; 1.1 The Respiratory System
Duration: 3 hours Resources: Learners book, Digital classroom,
narrow bottle tube, balloon, sticky putty, straw,
scissors, t, electrical tape, elastic band, play dough,
sponge

Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the class will be able to;
 Describe the human respiratory system in humans.
 Use models, including diagrams, to represent and describe scientific phenomenon and ideas.

Development of Lessons:

(Day 1  Describe the human respiratory system in humans.

Mon., 1
Hour) Tr. begins the lesson by taking leaners through the following keywords
1. Breathing
2. Breathing rate
3. Diaphragm
4. Lungs
5. Windpipe

Tr. pair learners and ask them to breathing in and out. Explain to them that as we breathe in
and out, we send in oxygen and bring out carbon dioxide. Ask learners to close their mouth
and hold their nose for a minute, share their experiences.

Tr. defines respiration as the means by which living organisms exchange gas to create energy
for survival.

Tr. guide learners to examine parts of the respiration system in their books draw and neatly
label it.

My First Step International School

Tr. draws learners’ existing knowledge on the lungs and breathing by asking the following
questions.
1. Which body organ do we use for breathing?
2. Where in the body is this organ found?
3. How many times do we breathe each minute?
4. Why do we need to breathe?
5. Do we breathe all the time? Say why or why not.
Tr. investigates and demonstrates how breathing involves two different stages, breathing in
and breathing out. Use the learners’ book to perform
Activity 1.

My First Step International School

Tr. revises the previous lesson by through questions and remedial works.

Tr. explores learners’ practical experience to measure how much air we breathe in and out of
the lung by exhaling in a balloon.

(Day 2
Tue., 1
Hour)

Learners take turns to blow air into a balloon and measure the size of the blown-up balloon.
This gives them an idea on how much air their lungs can hold.

Assessment: Classwork- Workbook ( 1.2 ; 1)

(Day 3
Wed., 1  Use models, including diagrams, to represent and describe scientific phenomenon and
Hour) ideas

Tr. pair learners to undergo a practical work while the think like scientists by following steps in
the leaners’ book on page 15

Tr. makes a model to show how the respiration system looks like in humans

Learners make their own model of the respiration system to represent how it works in real life.

(Day 4

Differentiation (Addressing all learner’s needs):

Learners work in pairs and in groups to provide support for one another.

Home work/ Project/ Research:

Homework: 1. Draw the human respiratory system, label and name the parts.
2. Model the human respiratory system and state the function of the lung, nose, diaphragm,
windpipe
