EEE 391 Final Exam Spring 2020–2021

1. (a) Make a graph of [u(t + 0.5) − u(t − 0.5)] ∗ dtd [−4u(t + 0.5) + 4u(t − 0.5)], where u(t) is the unit-step
function. Indicate all significant points.
∞R
(b) The output y(t) of a system is related to its input x(t) through y(t) = −∞ (t2 + τ 2 ) x(τ ) dτ .
Is the system linear? Is it time invariant? If it exists, find the impulse response. If not, explain why.

2. (a) Find the system function H(z) of the system characterized by the difference equation:
y[n] = 0.75y[n − 1] + 2x[n] + x[n − 1]
(b) Find the impulse response of the system characterized by the differential equation:
dy(t)
+ 3y(t) = x(t)
dt
3. (a) The impulse response of a system is h(t) = 3e−2πt u(t). The input is x(t) = δ(t − 1) + ej5πt .
Find the output y(t).
F
(b) If x(t) ←→ X(jω), find the Fourier transform of x((t/4) − 3) in terms of X(jω).
Clearly state which property(ies) of the Fourier transform that you are using.

4. Consider the following system function of a discrete-time system:

1 − z −2
H(z) = √
1 − 0.9 2 z −1 + 0.81z −2
a) Plot the poles and zeros of this system in the complex plane.
b) Roughly sketch the magnitude response |H(ej ω̂ )| using the pole and zero locations.
Indicate significant points.
c) Find the difference equation describing this system.

Important Note: 1(b) and 2(b) are worth 15 points. All other question parts are worth 10 points.
