Problems for Module 2, Physics 2 - Fluid Mechanics

1) Give a definition of fluid.

2) Establish the equation for pressure of fluid as a function of depth.
3) Give a statement of Pascal's principle and one application of this principle.
4) What are the conditions for a fluid to be ideal? Why do we need the concept of ideal fluid?
5) Give the definition of fluid streamlines and their properties.
6) Establish the equation of continuity for fluid flows.
7) Establish Bernoulli’s equation for fluids.
8) Describe Venturi tube and give some applications of it.
9) Give the statement and corresponding formula for Newton's law of viscosity.
10) The space between two parallel plates kept at 3 mm apart is filled with an oil
of viscosity coefficient µ = 0.2 Pa.s (see the figure on the right). Find the
shear stress on the lower plate, if the upper plate is moved with velocity
V = 1.5 m/s. Assume that the velocity profile is linear.
Ans. τ = 1.813 x 10 -2 Pa. τ < 0 because the shear stress is opposite to the
positive direction of the horizontal axis.

The next following problems are from Serway, Raymond; Faughn, Jerry (2003), College Physics 7th ed.
Thompson, Brooks/Cole.

Ans. (a) 80 g/s, (b) 0.27 mm/s
