UNIT 1

1.Define SYSTEM.

A system comprises a complex combination of resources (in the form of human beings, materials,
equipment, hardware, software, facilities, data, information, services, etc.), integrated in such a manner
as to fulfill a specified operatSystem may be classified as a natural system, human-made system,
physical system, conceptual system, closed-loop system, open-loop system, static system, dynamic
system, and so on.

2. General Characteristics of a system?

1. A system constitutes a complex combination of resources in the form of human beings, materials,
equipment, hardware, software, facilities, data, money
2. A system is contained within some form of hierarchy.
3. A system may be broken down into subsystems and related components, the extent of which depends
on complexity and the function being performed.
4. A system must have a purpose.

3. What are the Categories of Systems?

1. Natural and man-made systems.

2. Physical and conceptual systems.

3. Static and dynamic systems.

4. Closed and open-loop systems.

4. what are the major elements of the system?

6. Define System Life Cycle.

The life cycle includes the entire spectrum of activity for a given system, commencing with the
identification of need and extending through system design and development, production and/or
construction, operational use and sustaining maintenance and support, and system retirement and
material disposal.

7. System of Systems.

8. Systems Engineering Life Cyclestages.

the systems life cycle model consists of three stages, the first two encompassing the developmental part
of the life cycle, and the third the postdevelopment period. These stages will be referred to as
(1) The concept development stage, which is the initial stage of the formulation and definition of a
system concept perceived to best satisfy a valid need;
(2) the engineering development stage, which covers the translation of the system concept into a
validated physical system design meeting the operational, cost, and schedule requirements; and
(3) the postdevelopment stage, which includes the production, deployment, operation, and support of
the system throughout its useful life.

9. Draw the Principal stages of system life cycle.

10. Draw the conceptual development phases of system life cycle.

11. What are the Top down and Bottom up System Development Process?

12. Waterfall Model of Development

The waterfall model works well when... problem and solution method are well understood, requiring
no large-loop corrections to development problems.

Limitations of Waterfall Model

• Changing requirements proved to be the biggest cause of cost overruns and
schedule slips in the waterfall era.
• Users were found to be unable to define the requirements of a complex
system without having had hands-on previous experience with the system

13. Spiral model ?

Spiral model corresponds to risk oriented iterative enhancement.
14. V Model for system development

15. Feedback in system engineering Process.
