Zika virus disease is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquetoes

simptom

Symptoms are generally mild and include fever, rash, conjunctivitis,

muscle and joint pain, malaise or headache

transmission

Zika virus is primarily transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito

from the Aedes mosquito. Aedes mosquitoes usually bite during the
day, peaking during early morning and late afternoon/evening. This is
the same mosquito that transmits dengue, chikungunya and yellow
fever.

Zika virus is also transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy,

through transfusion of blood and blood products, and organ
transplantation.

prevention

Protection against mosquito bites during the day and early evening is a
key measure to prevent Zika virus infection. Special attention should be
given to pregnant women, women of reproductive age, and young
children.

Personal protection measures include wearing clothing (preferably light-

coloured) that covers as much of the body as possible using physical
barriers such as window screens and closed doors and windows and
applying insect repellent to skin or clothing.

Young children and pregnant women should sleep under mosquito nets
if sleeping during the day or early evening.

Birth defect

Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of microcephaly.

During pregnancy, a baby's head grows because the baby's brain grows.
Microcephaly can occur because a baby's brain has not developed
properly during pregnancy or has stopped growing after birth.
Guillain-Barré (Ghee-YAN Bah-RAY) syndrome (GBS) is a rare,
autoimmune disorder in which a person’s own immune system
damages the nerves, causing muscle weakness and sometimes
paralysis. GBS can cause symptoms that last for a few weeks to
several years. Most people recover fully, but some have permanent
nerve damage.
