be used to create site-specific packages for the purpose of permit requests. All
drawings are generic in nature.

1.2 Product Description

The HydroWorx 1200 Series is a Hydrotherapy system made of powder coated carbon-
steel wall panels covered with a PVC liner and includes resistance jets, underwater video
system, and a 6’ X 9’-6” underwater treadmill. It is designed to be installed in a
mechanical pit and so the coping edge of the pool walls are 0” to 1/8” above the
finished floor level. The 6’ X 9’-6” treadmill speed is adjustable from 0.2 mph through
8.5 mph in 0.1 mph increments. The height of the treadmill is adjustable from floor level
to 6’-0” deep to create a zero-entry hydrotherapy system. There is an HMI (Human
Machine Interface) touch screen control system for all pool operations that couples with
a tablet for remote control operation and TV for monitoring of pool operations.

1.3 Regulatory and Code Compliance

As regulatory and code requirements vary significantly from state to state and even
between local jurisdictional agencies, permitting and compliance with state and local
provisions relative to health, pool/spa, building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, safety,
etc. is the responsibility of the owner. It is critical that the owner and/or their
authorized design representative consult with the agencies having jurisdiction to
ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and code requirements. Contact
HydroWorx immediately should regulatory or code circumstances arise.

2.0 Installation
It is very important to consider all aspects of the installation site, including:

REV C.4 3
• Access & Serviceability
• Site Preparation
• Hydrotherapy Room
• Mechanical Pit
• Utility Requirements
Read more about each of these in the sections below.

2.1 Access & Serviceability

Regardless of the timing of the pool delivery, a minimum 7’ wide x 7’ high clear rollable
access path form the unloading location to inside the Hydrotherapy room with turning
clearances that can accommodate a 10’ long x 7’ wide pool component and contractors
rigging equipment is required. Having a clear unobstructed access route from the
point of unloading to the place of installation is critical and is often overlooked. If
the unit cannot be installed due to obstructions, it may cause a postponement and
redeployment of technicians at owner’s expense.

Recommended minimum architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing

design criteria identified in this design and installation guide must be maintained for
future serviceability of the pool. Please contact HydroWorx if any part of the design
does not meet HydroWorx's required minimums. Your product may be subject to
increased design and installation fees as well as a voided warranty.

HydroWorx requires that site-specific layout drawings be submitted for review

prior to manufacturing the product. For easy planning and correct manufacturing
of the product, this step should be complete prior to finalizing the sales contract.

2.2 Site Preparation

The owner, owner’s representative, and/or the owner’s contractor is responsible for
preparation of the site prior to delivery & installation. The final location of the system,
including the routing and connection of all utilities—incoming power, water, sanitary,
etc.—required for system operation must be designed and installed by the owner,
owner representative, and/or the owner’s contractor. For more details about system
requirements, please refer to the technical specifications below.

2.3 Hydrotherapy Room

The water treatment area of the HydroWorx 1200 Series is designed to accommodate
up to 2 patients/athletes during treatment sessions.

REV C.4 4
Additional space may be necessary to facilitate installation and provide future service
space around and above the pool. Additional space may also be necessary for these and
similar items:
 dehumidification systems
 cabinetry
 storage
 showers
 changing rooms

2.3.1 Hydrotherapy Room Floor Requirements

The design of the hydrotherapy area must include floor or perimeter drains. If floor
drains are chosen, several should be placed around the pool with special attention to
the high traffic areas. The finished floor MUST be flat/level and consistent at all edges of
the opening for a minimum distance of 4” beyond the opening edge.

2.3.2 HVAC/Air Temp Requirements

Adequate airflow, temperature control, and dehumidification in the hydrotherapy room

are necessary to maintain a comfortable temperature for the occupants, and to mitigate
the adverse conditions that are typical in a humid environment. The unit has a surface
area of 57 square feet and therapy water is generally kept between 92-94 degrees
Fahrenheit. The air temperature in hydrotherapy rooms is typically kept at 85 degrees
Fahrenheit to minimize the difference between the water and the ambient air
temperatures. Generally, the daily evaporation rate under these conditions is
approximately 15-20 gallons per day. Consult jurisdictional codes to ensure compliance
with minimum air exchange and humidity requirements.

2.3.3 Pool Controls and Video Systems

The HydroWorx 1200 includes an HMI control and underwater video monitoring system. The
hydrotherapy room design must include customer supplied cabinetry located near the front of
the unit as well as electrical receptacles that can accommodate two 40” TVs, DVR, HMI, iPad
and an Android TV Streaming Box. The owner shall provide a 3” chase underneath the cabinetry
to route wires from the control panel in the mechanical pit to the equipment in the pool room.
The chase shall be straight pipe or long sweep—no 90-degree elbows. This chase is to be
dedicated to HydroWorx low voltage control cables ONLY.

REV C.4 5
2.4 Mechanical Pit
The mechanical pit design must include adequate, unobstructed access to the pool
walls, electrical control panel, and accessory equipment such as the filter, pumps,
chemical feeder, and heater. Moving any of this equipment may result in the voiding of
warranty coverage.
Minimum dimensions for the mechanical pit are shown in the enclosed drawings. The
design must also include:
 HVAC controls that are appropriate for the entire area
 Lighting
 Sump pump or drains

2.4.1 HVAC Requirements

The mechanical room should be designed to maintain an ambient temperature of 70 -

80° F and a relative humidity of 50-70%. The information below may be utilized for heat
discharge calculations when determining the appropriate HVAC design.

A fully-equipped HydroWorx 1200 Series unit includes the following:

 1 — 30 kW Electric Heater
 1 — 4 HP Front Therapy Jet Pump (10,188 BTU/hr)
 1 — 10 HP Treadmill Motor (25,470 BTU/hr)
 1 — 2 HP Lift Motor (5,094 BTU/hr)
 1 — 1 HP Maintenance Pump (2,547 BTU/hr)

REV C.4 6
2.4.2 Floor Requirements

The floor shall be designed to support the weight of the pool and equipment. It is
recommended to build an elevated pad for the pool to sit on. The elevated pad makes it
easier to control the tolerances. The floor/pad below the pool must be built to exacting
specifications. The floor must be level, having no more than a 1/8-inch variance
over 10 feet in any direction—as measured with long level or straightedge. The floor
must be hard-troweled and finished smooth, not left rough as is commonly done in
mechanical rooms. Prior to Phase 1 installation the general contractor must perform a
floor elevation survey that focuses specifically on the areas on which the equipment will
rest. If the slab does not meet the specifications above, then corrective action must be
taken prior to Phase 1 installation.

The structural weight of the pool is 10,000 pounds. Together with the weight of 3,100
gallons of water (which is 26,00 pounds), the total weight is 36,000 pounds. This
weight rests on the mechanical pit floor, therefore it is important to consult a structural
engineer ensure adequate structural requirements for the floor. The pool walls are
fastened to the floor with concrete wedge anchors.

2.4.3 Drain
The HydroWorx pool is drained by gravity through a drain fitting located at the bottom
of the pool wall. The drain fitting must be connected to a sump pit or gravity drain so
the water can discharge during normal maintenance and as necessary for operational
demands of the owner. The sump pit or gravity drain chosen by the owner’s design
professional must accommodate a minimum of 60 GPM. The HydroWorx maintenance
pump CANNOT be used to drain the pool since this will void the pump warranty.

2.5 Utility Requirements

2.5.1 Water Supply
2.5.1.1 Hydrotherapy Room
The owner shall provide a ¾-inch hose bib with anti-siphon device located in the
hydrotherapy room to wash down the pool deck.

2.5.1.2 Mechanical Pit

The owner shall provide a minimum 2-inch water supply line with an anti-siphon device
connected to the auto-fill valve/recirculation. It is also necessary for the owner to
provide a ¾-inch diameter hose bib with anti-siphon device to rinse the filter.

2.5.2 Electrical Service

REV C.4 7
2.5.2.1 Hydrotherapy Room
The owner shall provide a GFI protected 110V electrical outlet for the pool controls and video
display. HydroWorx provides (1) 6-receptacle power strip. If all the equipment is not placed in
the same cabinet, additional outlets may need to be provided. The owner shall provide a 3”
chase underneath the cabinetry to route wires from the control panel in the mechanical pit to
the equipment in the pool room.

2.5.2.2 Mechanical Pit

The owner shall provide two (2) electrical service drops designed for the HydroWorx
control panel and the HydroWorx supplied heater:

Drop Voltage Amperage Type Wiring configuration

Control Panel ground, and neutral)
Drop 2 — 30 kW 120/208 volt 110 A 3-phase 4-wire (L1, L2, L3,
Heater ground)

Note: Ground and neutral wires to be sized at least equal to power conductors

2.5.3 Sanitary
2.5.3.1 Hydrotherapy Room
The owner shall provide perimeter floor drains around the pool to capture bather runoff,
splashing, and hosing down of the pool deck.

2.5.3.2 Mechanical Pit

The owner shall provide a sump pit with pump or floor drains for connection to the
pool’s maintenance system and main drains. The design of the sanitary system should
accommodate the total volume of the pool (3,100 gallons) by gravity through a 2-inch
PVC pipe. A 60 GPM draining capacity in the HydroWorx mechanical space is the
acceptable minimum. This 60 GPM is for the HydroWorx pool only and does not
consider any domestic water lines in the pit. The HydroWorx maintenance pump
CANNOT be used to drain the pool or it will void the components warranty.

3.0 Scopes of Work

Contributions and effort from several different participants will be necessary to
complete the installation. This section explains the details for each of the following:

REV C.4 8
3.1 Owner/General Contractor Scope-of-Work
The Owner, Customer, or Customer Representative may serve in the role of the General
Contractor for the purpose of a HydroWorx installation.

The General Contractor must ensure that the hydrotherapy room and mechanical pit are
built according to both the (a) owner’s design documents and (b) this HydroWorx
Design & Installation Guide. Specifically, the General Contractor must arrange for the
successful completion of the following:

 Receiving and unloading the components and equipment according to the

delivery date shown on the Delivery Confirmation Form (DCF).
 Providing the pressure-treated wood-nailer around the perimeter of the rough
opening for the pool.
 Providing a 3” diameter opening/chase/straight pipe or long sweep—no 90-
degree elbows. This is to be dedicated to HydroWorx low voltage control cables
ONLY, which run from the mechanical pit into the hydrotherapy room near the
pool HMI control system. Typically, the control system is housed in a customer
supplied cabinet at the center of the wall on the front side of the pool. The front
of a HydroWorx unit is the end in which the resistance jets are found. No other
cables are to be ran in this chase since it may cause interference with the
control system communication and cause erratic operational behaviour.
 Ensure the HydroWorx pool and its equipment are protected during the entire
construction phase.
 Set the external pool equipment in the mechanical space according to the
equipment layout
 Assemble the pool tank walls according to the hydrotherapy room layout and the
HydroWorx provided Phase 1 assembly instructions.
 Set the Phase 2 labeled components down into the pool and install a protective
covering to ensure the safe-keeping of the equipment through the remainder of
the construction phase until the unit is ready for Phase 2 installation.
 Ensuring the sump pit is fully operational before the equipment is set to
avoid water damage.

3.2 Installation Phases

There are two phases to the installation of the HydroWorx 1200 and each phase should
be overseen by the General Contractor. Each phase is explained in the following
sections.

REV C.4 9
NOTE: Please don’t hesitate to consult with HydroWorx on the delivery plan
proposal.

3.2.1 Phase 1
3.2.1.1 Phase 1 - General Contractor Scopes of Work
The General Contractor is responsible for scheduling and providing of access from the
point of delivery to the final location of the unit and components. The dimension of the
largest component is 9’-6” length x 6’ width x 4’ height with an approximate weight of
3,200 lbs.

Supplying rigging equipment is necessary to perform the unloading and assembly

responsibilities.

Typical equipment includes:

 a lull / telescopic handler, with minimum 6’ fork extensions
 adequately rated straps and shackles
 adequately rated carpet dollies and drywall carts.
 a gantry crane with a capacity rating of 2 tons, 12’ beam and 2 ton electric chain
hoist is necessary to set the pool components in the pit. A minimum clear ceiling
height of 10’ is required in the pool room to provide clearance for this crane. This
crane can be sourced at a local equipment rental company.

Upon completion of the Phase 1 work, it is the responsibility of the General

Contractor to protect the pool and components from damage and ensure that
there is no standing water in the mechanical pit at any time.

To ensure that all Phase 1 tasks are fully complete and correct, the General Contractor is
responsible for completing and returning the Phase 1 Quality Review checklist to
HydroWorx.

3.2.1.2 Phase 1 - Plumbing Contractor Scope of Work

Typically, the plumbing contractor performs the following:

1. Provide all labor, materials, and equipment necessary to install interconnecting

plumbing between each HydroWorx unit component and the pool structure
according to the owner’s design documents and this guide.
2. Ensure that all HydroWorx equipment—such as any pumps, filters, or heaters—
are kept off the mechanical pit floor by means of a skid or other blocking.

REV C.4 10
3. Provide a means to drain the unit and the maintenance system by gravity
through a 2-inch PVC drain line into the sump pit or floor drain, as shown in this
guide. The acceptable minimum draining capacity in the HydroWorx mechanical
space is 60 GPM for HydroWorx equipment (refer to the HydroWorx drain detail).
It is critical to install this piping to drain the entire unit by gravity alone. The pipe
invert shall be lower than the drain invert.
4. Provide a minimum 2-inch diameter water supply line with an anti-siphon device,
auto fill bypass, and hose bib that connects to the fill line as shown in the
HydroWorx drawings.
5. Provide and install all piping, fittings, valves—including ABS 3-way Jandy
directional flow valves. Unless otherwise noted, all conveyance piping, fittings,
and valves, must be Schedule 40 PVC (pressure type), fastened with heavy-bodied
clear pipe glue. Threaded fittings must be connected using silicon and sealant.
DO NOT use plumbing pipe-thread sealer as these can degrade PVC over
time.
6. Install piping such that there is an immediate transition from the supplied 1-½-
inch male adapters for the suction, return, and equalizer pool wall fittings on the
pool to 2-inch schedule 40 PVC pipe (pressure type). Carefully thread the fitting
nut and hand-tighten only. DO NOT USE SILICONE. The final seal will be done
by the HydroWorx approved Phase 2 installer.

3.2.1.3 Phase 1 - HydroWorx Scope of Work

HydroWorx has no scope of work for Phase 1 and is not present for the delivery,
offloading, or setting of the equipment or skids.

3.2.2 Phase 2
3.2.2.1 Phase 2 - Scopes of Work

Phase 2 occurs 1 to 2 weeks prior to final project completion. The HydroWorx

technicians (or HydroWorx-approved installers) will require all day site access for the
duration of the installation time frame including Saturday and Sunday. All plumbing
and electrical work on the pool must be complete thirty (30) days prior to
scheduling the Phase 2 final installation. The permanent power and water must also
be operational at this time.

The General Contractor must also arrange for the installation of pool room finishes
including:
 Pool depth markers
 Safety equipment

REV C.4 11
 Signage
 Poolroom cabinetry
 Filling or caulking the 1” gap around the pool perimeter decking where it meets
the rough opening
o This needs to be a self-leveling expandable sealant rated for pool room
environments

HydroWorx installers or certified installers WILL NOT perform any installation for
any items not directly supplied by HydroWorx.

At the completion of the Phase 2 system testing and startup, the pool must be left filled
and running for 30 days or until the building is turned over to the customer. During this
time the General Contractor will need to hire a certified pool operator to maintain
water quality. The aim is to ensure that there is no staining of the pool liner and there is
no damage to internal equipment or pool equipment that might result from an
imbalance of the pool. It is also the responsibility of the General Contractor to protect
the pool and components from damage until the final turnover to the owner/customer.

3.2.2.2 Phase 2 - Mechanical Contractor Scopes of Work

Typically, the mechanical contractor performs the following:

1. Provides all labor, materials, and equipment necessary to support all terms in the:
a. Owner’s contract
b. The conditions specified in this guide
c. Designs for adequate heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and
dehumidification of the hydrotherapy room and mechanical pit.
2. Installing a properly-sized ventilation and humidity control unit. This is to ensure
the mechanical pit temperature does not rise above 85 degrees Fahrenheit while
considering the respective heat loads for the pool equipment.
3. Ensuring that careful heat load calculations are considered for all other disciplines
that relate to the mechanical pit.
4. Ensuring adequate airflow, temperature control, and dehumidification in the
hydrotherapy room —primarily to maintain a comfortable temperature for the
pool occupants and protect against the adverse conditions of a humid
environment.

3.2.2.3 Phase 2 - Electrical Contractor Scope-of-Work

Typically, the electrical contractor performs the following:

REV C.4 12
1. Provide and connect a 120/208 volt, 100 amp, 3-phase, 5-wire configuration (L1,
L2, L3, Ground, and Neutral), to the HydroWorx control panel.

NOTE: Ground wire must be at least the same size as the power conductors.

2. Provide and connect a 120/208 volt, 110 amp, 3-phase, 4-wire configuration (L1,
L2, L3, and Ground), to the HydroWorx 30 kW heater.

NOTE: Ground wire must be at least the same size as the power conductors.

3. Provide all labor, materials, and equipment necessary to install interconnecting

electrical conduit and wiring between each HydroWorx pool component and the
HydroWorx Control Panel as required by the owner’s design documents, the
HydroWorx Installation Guide, and the panel manufacturer wiring diagram
located inside the HydroWorx control panel.

4. Install metal conduit and wire from the HydroWorx Control Panel and terminate
the feed to each of the following pool components according to local building
codes:
a. (1) - 10 HP Treadmill Drive Motor
b. (1) - 4 HP Front Jet Pump
c. (1) - 1 HP Maintenance Pump
d. (1) - 2 HP Lift Motor
e. (1) - Automatic Water Level System Solenoid Valve
5. Unless otherwise required by code, all wiring for the devices listed shall be
enclosed in the appropriate size NEMA 4X metal conduit or PVC conduit spaced
at least 8” apart and terminated at the device with 3 feet of flexible Liquidtite
conduit. NEMA 4X metal conduit or PVC conduit spaced at least 8” apart is
required to reduce motor noise and GFCI nuisance tripping. All conduit entry
points must be sealed with UL Listed sealing device. Each motor requires a
separate conduit run.
6. Wire the motor brake to the lift motor. The brake is mounted to the motor but is
not prewired.
7. The pool steel tank walls and all equipment, including the video cameras, must
be bonded with a bonding wire as required by code. The gauge of the ground
wire of any appliance must be as large as the hot wire(s), to be capable of
efficiently conducting electricity away from the device in the event of a short
circuit or stray current—as well as prevent GFCI nuisance tripping.

REV C.4 13
8. When installing field wiring, use at least 75°C stranded copper MTW or THHN
wire of proper size (refer to electrical schematic)—DO NOT use solid wire or
Romex.
9. Prior to connection to the HydroWorx Control Panel, check the voltage at each
leg of the 100 amp 3-phase service feed and ensure the voltages are correct. Do
not turn the power on if the voltages are incorrect; this will void the
warranty of the control panel!

Electrical Components - Installation & Maintenance Inspection Checklists

and Warranty Activation Forms

It is critically important to refer to the electrical installation checklist included in this

installation guide and inside the electrical panel for items to be completed by the
qualified licensed electrician. Verification with these checklists ensures that the
installation meets the proper specifications of all referenced manufacturers. The owner
should request copies of all completed forms from the electrical contractor before
permitting use of the HydroWorx pool. A qualified licensed electrician should perform
an annual inspection of each item on the checklist to ensure ongoing compliance.

3.2.2.4 Phase 2 - HydroWorx Scope of Work

The General Contractor shall use HydroWorx or a HydroWorx certified installer to
perform the following installation activities:

 Perform the proprietary internal mechanical assembly

 Ensure proper application of the pool lining finishes
 Install the cameras, video monitoring and HMI systems
 Perform system testing
 Start up the system

Failure to use a factory or certified installer to perform these installation activities

may result in voiding of the warranty!

4.0 Checklists
HydroWorx will provide checklists during each stage of the project to ensure that all
requirements are met to provide a smooth install and start-up. These checklists will also
improve the coordination of the HydroWorx pool(s) in the design and construction
