Personality Disorders
Personality disorders are complex mental health conditions that affect multiple areas of a person’s
life, including behavior, thoughts, and feelings, on a daily basis. They can also affect how you
understand and relate to other people, as well as your general health and wellbeing.

According to the DSM-5 TR, there are about ten personality disorders which are as follows:

 Paranoid personality disorder

 Schizoid personality disorder
 Schizotypal personality disorder
 Antisocial Personality Disorder
 Borderline Personality Disorder
 Histrionic Personality Disorder
 Narcissistic Personality Disorder
 Avoidant Personality Disorder
 Dependent Personality Disorder
 Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder

These disorders are then divided into three clusters namely, Cluster A, Cluster B, Cluster C:

CLUSTER A
Cluster A includes Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders. People in this
cluster struggle with social situations and often keep to themselves. They have strange thoughts,
from being overly suspicious to not caring about forming close relations with other people at all.
Some may even imagine things that are not real. The common problem faced by the people who
have this disorder is difficulty in socializing. As a result, many people with these disorders feel
isolated and might think of themselves as loners.

CLUSTER B
Cluster B includes Borderline, Narcissistic, Histrionic and Antisocial Personality Disorders.
People in this cluster often struggle with controlling their impulses and handling their emotions.
They may express their emotions in an imbalanced state i-e sometime expressing heightened
emotions or sometimes not expressing emotions at all. For example, someone with Antisocial or
Narcissistic disorder might lack empathy and not care about others' feelings. On the other hand,
someone with Histrionic and Borderline personality disorder might seem very emotional, angry,
or emotionally unpredictable i-e going from happy to sad in a short period of time.

CLUSTER C
Cluster C consists of people dealing with intense anxiety and fear, and includes personality
disorders such as Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders. The
common symptom of these disorders is the high level of anxiety, which can show up in various
ways. The people with these personality disorders may exhibit two types of behavior i-e they either
struggle with low self-esteem and feel unworthy of close relationships or they may be obsessive
and compulsive. Some might even refuse to compromise with other people which in turn results
in conflicts.
