Chemical Kinetics - Notes
Rate of a reaction is defined as the change in concentration of a reactant or product in unit time.
Its unit is mol L-1s-1.
Average rate – Average rate is the ration of change in concentration of reactants or products and
the time taken for that change to occur .
R P
As Δt → 0 ,
Rate of reaction
Rate Law − An expression in which the rate of reaction is given in terms of the molar
concentration of the reactants, with each term raised to some power, which may or may
not be the stoichiometric coefficient of the reacting species in a balanced chemical
equation.
Example:
Rate Constant : It is the rate of the reaction when the concentration of the reactant
terms in the rate law is unity.
If [R] is plotted against time (t), a straight line is obtained.(Fig 4.3 Page – 104)
Rate = k[NH3]0 = k
Plot of log [R]o / [R] vs. t is shown in the figure 4.5 Page – 106.
For a first order reaction, the half-life period is constant, i.e., is independent of
[R]0.
The concentration of water does not get altered much during the course of the reaction as
it is present in excess and the reaction behaves as first order reaction.
Temperature Dependence of Rate of a Reaction
Factor represents the fraction of molecules that have kinetic energy greater
than Ea.
Plot of vs gives a straight line (shown in figure 4.10 Page - 113). Slope = -Ea / R
Effect of Catalyst
Catalyst reduces the activation energy between the reactants and products and
hence, lowers the potential energy barrier (shown in figure 4.11 Page - 115).
Threshold energy – The minimum energy the reactant molecules should possess for
effective collision to be converted into products.
Activation energy - The extra energy required over and above the average energy of the
reactant molecules for the reaction to occur.
Collision frequency (Z) - Number of collisions per second per unit volume of the
reaction mixture.
In collision theory, the factors that determine the criteria for effective collisions are:

Proper orientation of molecules
