UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF
PHYLUM CHORDATA

Development of mesodermal skeletal rod,

called notochord
- flexible rod-like structure of mesodermal cells that is the
principal longitudinal structural element of chordates and of the
early embryo of vertebrates, in both of which it plays an
organizational role in nervous system development.

Development of paired gill slits in pharynx

-opening in the pharynx that develops into gill arches in bony fish
and into the jaw and inner ear in terrestrial animals.

Presence of an unpaired dorsal, hollow, nerve

cord
-a dorsal tubular cord of nervous tissue above the notochord.
Develops into the central nervous system-the brain and the
spine.

Presence of post anal tail

-a skeletal extension of the posterior end of the body; being
absent in humans and apes, although present during embryonic
development. Aids in balance.

UNIQUE CHARACTERISTIC OF
PANDA BEAR

They have great camouflage for their

environment
-The giant panda's distinct black-and-white markings have two
functions: camouflage and communication. Most of the panda, its
face, neck, belly, rump is white to help it hide in snowy habitats.
The arms and legs are black, helping it to hide in shade.

A helping hand
-They have an extended wrist bone that they use like a thumb to
help them grip food.

They spend a lot of their day eating

-Giant pandas spend 10-16 hours a day feeding, mainly on bamboo.

They do occasionally eat something other than

bamboo
-Although pandas are 99% vegetarian their digestive system is typical
of a carnivore. For the 1% of their diet that isn't bamboo, pandas eat
eggs, small animals, carrion, and forage in farmland for pumpkin,
kidney beans, wheat and domestic pig food.

They like to keep it regular

-On average, pandas poo 40 times a day
