NURSING ENGLISH LANGUAGE

REQUIREMENTS
To be considered for the nursing or nursing/midwifery courses listed on your application, you must meet certain English language
requirements. This is an Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) accreditation requirement. To be eligible
to enrol into the course, you must meet the English language requirements of the ANMAC Accreditation Standards, leading to
initial registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
These requirements include a written declaration that English is your primary language or evidence of achievement of the
minimum English language test result as specified in the NMBA English language skills registration standard.
How can I meet the requirements?
The NMBA has defined two ways that you can demonstrate meeting these requirements:
• English as your primary language: you must have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and
secondary education taught and assessed solely in English. At least two years of this education must have been between grades 7
and 12. This education must have been completed in one or more of the following countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand,
Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America.
Or
• English language test: if you do not meet the requirements for the above pathway, you will need to complete an approved English
language test as part of your application: IELTS (academic module), TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or OET and achieve
the minimum scores. Minimum scores are available on the NMBA website.
Further information about these options is available in the English language skills registration standard (2019)
(nursing and midwifery).
