C1–C2
PROGRESS TEST 1 | Version C

A famous artist once said that there was no past or future in art. But art has

always reflected our changing relationship with time. Some of the

earliest cave paintings record our ancestors’ shift from immediacy of

sensation to an understanding of duration by recording their presence:

from I am here to I was here. With the climate crisis, our interaction with time

is changing still. The last residue of carbon from burning fossil fuels

will linger in the atmosphere 100,000 years from now. Plastic and concrete

will become our own fossil traces, declaring we were here.

Deep time – the time of the planet itself – has been in art from the beginning.

But for much of the history of art, time was only as old as humanity. It

wasn’t until James Hutton’s ‘Theory of the Earth’ (1788), when he imagined

the immense timescales necessary to raise mountains and grind them

down, that artists began to contemplate the unimaginable age of the world.

In works such as ‘Rain, Steam and Speed’ (1844), Turner dramatised a

fundamental shift in our relationship with deep time. When he died in 1851,

the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere was 280 parts per million

(ppm). Today it is 415ppm, a level last reached 3.5 million years ago. Global

mean temperatures have increased by one degree and, unless we

decarbonise, the increase could reach a catastrophic five degrees by 2100.

Choices we make today affect what kind of world our descendants will

inherit for thousands of years to come.

C1–C2
PROGRESS TEST 1 | Version C

Artists are again reflecting our changed relationship with time.

Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky’s epic aerial images of post-

industrial landscapes transform open-cast mines and oil-polluted

deltas into abstract patterns. Meanwhile, a 60-metre clock that will keep time

for 10,000 years has been constructed in America. Once complete, the

‘Clock of the Long Now’ will tick once a year and chime every thousand

years.

Perhaps the most powerful deep-time artwork looks less than 100 years into

the future. Katie Paterson’s ‘Future Library’ invites one writer each

year to contribute a new work, which will remain unread until 2114. Future

Library’s unread works are stories told to the future, a gift to readers

yet to be born.

Deep time art shows that our sense of time needs to change radically

to reflect the strange moment we live in, where choices made today will

radically influence the kind of world future generations inherit. We are,

inadvertently, telling stories to future generations: every microplastic and

particle of carbon that leaves a mark on deep time will tell a tale about

how we lived and what we valued most. The art of the deep future can help

us decide what we want this story to be.

PROGRESS TEST 1 | Version C

Yes – talking about THAT test!

ANGELA
It’s a fairly common question, particularly at job interviews, you know the
‘what’s your greatest achievement’ one? And I’d guess that the
majority of people don’t need to search the recesses of their minds to come
up with answers involving grades, degrees, or perhaps later in life
everything that goes with having a child. Well, when posed that question
what immediately comes to my mind was the utter elation experienced
on passing my driving test. Does that sound familiar? In my case, it was a
significant achievement.

I’d been the golden girl at school, breezing through all my exams. I’d been
on school hockey teams, represented my county in athletics and been
in the national swimming finals. Winning came easily. But when it came to
learning to drive, it seemed that life had been waiting to throw
something very nasty at me, something unexpected that I couldn’t take in my
stride. I found that I simply could not multi-task in a car. Steering,
changing gears, using the pedals, checking mirrors all at the same time just
didn’t come naturally at all. I took expensive lesson after expensive
lesson. And then test after test. So, when on my fourth attempt the examiner
looked over his glasses at me and said in a serious voice ‘You’ve
passed’, happiness and relief exploded inside me and I nearly hugged him.
I was dancing on air for weeks. So, yes, my greatest achievement –
definitely getting my driving licence.

PROGRESS TEST 1 | Version C

PAOLO
My friends think I’ve had more than my fair share of luck, but I wouldn’t
agree. Yes, I’ve done well at college, and I’ve also had quite a lot of
success with my writing winning the top prize for a short story in a
competition last year. But I’ve had to work at being successful – I’m
not a natural winner. Some people in my circle just need to glance at a
textbook and remember every detail. Not me. I have to pore over every
item of information to take it in, and for every exam I’ve ever done, the
revision period’s been intense. I learn through repetition and that was
exactly how I learnt to drive. I practised and practised; here in my country
you can practise in your family car as long as someone with a
licence is with you. That was my poor father, who very patiently
accompanied me along country roads, and didn’t lose his temper if I
veered close to ditches or braked so violently at traffic lights that the air bags
nearly activated! But when the day of the test dawned, suddenly all the
confidence I’d built up drained away and I was a nervous wreck. It was the
fear of failing that brought me out in a sweat and the tantalising
thought that independence was just within reach – an independence I could
equally easily blow and then have to go through the whole thing again,
and even maybe again. Approaching my driving test was way scarier than
anything I’d ever done before. And the relief when I got the piece of
paper saying ‘Pass’ will live with me forever!
