6. Methodology
➢ Cleaning of the Surface

• Necessary area will be identified earlier referring architectural drawings/

approved shop drawings for the plastering work.
• Surface to receive plastering shall be dry brushed to remove all loose
particles, dust, laitance, efflorescence, etc. and any projecting fines on
concrete surface shall be hacked off. All P-con openings shall be filled
with approved construction grout
• All required openings for mechanical and electrical services, conduits pipes,
plugs shall be installed and test prior to plastering. Where necessary placing
of sunk boxes as for the fixing of switches & socket outlets
Clearance for MEP embeddings shall be taken from the
engineer prior to plastering
➢ Installing the level guides
• Level guides (to control surface flatness & the line of the finishing) up
to required thickness on walls will be fixed with reference to the 200mm
off lines to block walls set out on the floors by using center plumb bob
and nylon thread.

• In order to get uniform thickness of plastering throughout the wall

surface, first fix spot levels on the wall.
• Spot levels are fixed on the wall first horizontally and then vertically at
a distance of about 2 meters covering the entire wall surface.
• Check the verticality of spots, one over the other, by means of plumb-
bob.
• After fixing spot levels, the vertical strips of plaster are formed in
between the spots. These screeds serve as the gauges for maintaining
even thickness of plastering being applied.

Method Statement for Plastering Work

1:5 ratio for internal plastering

1:3 ratio for external plastering
➢ Mixing of mortar
• 1:4 Cement, Sand mix proportion of motor shall be used for internal &
external plaster.
• This may be done by machine or by hand. Machine mixing is preferable.
Hand mixing shall be done on a plywood or steel mixing board.
• Mix no more mortar at a time than can be used within two hours. Mortar
not used within the 1 1/2-hour time shall be disposed off-site.
1 hour of mixing
• Where mixing bed/ mixing bay usage for the manual mixing day to day
proper cleaning of the mixing bay is essential to have quality mortar mixing.

➢ Reinforcement with chicken mesh at the joint of RCC & masonry

elements.

• Vertical joints where structural columns/walls and block masonry will

be treated by fixing of 200 mm width chicken mesh with wire
nails/concrete nails by centering the mesh to the vertical wall joint.
• Horizontal joints of structural beams/slab and block masonry will be
treated by fixing of 200 mm width chicken mesh with wire nails/concrete
nails by centering the mesh to the horizontal joint
Block work shop drawing shall be produced and approval shall be taken prior to conducting any
block work.

➢ Application of plaster

• Allowable Average thickness of the plaster is 20 mm & as per the verticality

tolerance it will varies from location to location. Application of two coats on
same location to get the final finish will be the general practice. Where possible
single coat application will be done to finish the plaster.

• Block/RCC surfaces should be moistened prior to application of the

plaster coat to obtain good adhesion and prevent excessive absorption of
water from the motor by the block works/RCC.
• First coat/Dash coat mortar filling maximum to 10 mm will be applied on
surfaces where required mortar thickness is 20 mm.
• The second coat shall be applied with sufficient material and pressure to
ensure tight contact with dash coat.
• The surface of the second coat shall be brought to a true, even plane with
a straightedge, filling surface defects in place with plaster.

Buildmart Lanka (Pvt) Ltd Page 4

Method Statement for Plastering Work

➢ Surface finishing

• If necessary applied plaster shall be floated as smooth as possible and

then steel-troweled. Steel troweling shall be delayed as long as possible and
used only to eliminate the uneven points and to force aggregate particles in
to the plaster surface.
• Each plaster coat shall be applied to an entire wall panel without interruption
to avoid cold joints and abrupt changes in the uniform appearance of
succeeding coats. Plastering shall always done
from top to bottom.
• Make internal angles and corners square/ right angle.

•Plaster work shall be terminated at end of each day at casting bead,

corners, opening or other acceptable intersection of surface.
Termination shall be done on the body of the wall and it shall at least be
150mm away from any corners. The finished edge shall not be tapered
➢ Curing of the Plaster

• After the plaster has been applied and finished, keeping it moist for a
minimum of 3 days.
• Sufficient moisture shall be provided in the plaster by spraying water as
frequently as required at least twice per day.

Curing shall be done for 7 days

7. Inspections and Approvals

➢ On field site inspections and approvals sign off by team confirming

Consulting Engineer and Contractor representative.

the site safety meeting.
• A first aid box with the necessary medicine will be placed at the site first aid
room in case of an emergency.
• Adequate safe access to the working area shall be provided. Prior to
construction of block wall, necessary scaffolding through the spanning the
work area to be constructed up to the level of the block work completion.
The arrangement of the scaffolding to be able to hold the material that is to
be used for the block work construction as well the weight of the workers.
Scaffolding to be erected so that is to allow each mason may have free
access without being tied off. Adequate & safe access to be ensures before
working on top.
• Sufficient light shall be ensured before start of the work

• Necessary skilled personals to be used for the batching & working with the
pot mixer, power tools handling, etc.:

• While working on top & material handling on top, must secure the bottom
space without being dropping materials, tools, etc.: How ever the bottom
