INTRODUCTION TO MATHEMATICS A ITM 401S
Assignment
To be handed to the respective lecturers in class on Monday, 29 May 2023.
Quad paper may not be used where graph paper is required.
Instructions
1. Use this page as a cover page, printed on both sides.
2. This assignment is compulsory for ALL ITM401S students regardless of your semester mark. Failing to hand in
will result in a zero score and a failure in the course.
3. Assignments not submitted on deadline will not be marked.
4. Copied assignments/ “group work” will score zero marks.
5. The assignment should be neatly handwritten.
6. Marks will be allocated for the presentation of your assignment. Attention therefore has to be given to your
presentation in terms of handwriting, paper used, general appearance, layout, neatness, logical order,
language, spelling, etc.). Torn, punched, untidy work will lose marks.
7. Sketches should not be drawn on graph papers.
Do the following tasks. Use graph paper where applicable and show all critical information.

TASK 1
1.1 Choose and write down ANY point in the form ( x; y ) , for example (1; -1) . ( x; y  0) (Example may not be used….)
1.2 Use graph paper, a scale: 1cm = 1 unit and draw the graph of a circle with center at (0;0), that passes through
your point.
1.3 Find and write down the equation of the circle with center at (0;0), that passes through your point.
1.4 Find and write down the equation of the hyperbola that passes through your point.
1.5 Use the same system of axes as for your circle, a table of values and draw the graph of your hyperbola.
1.6 Indicate by encircling, where on your graph you would read off the simultaneous solutions.
1.7 Define an asymptote. If your graph contains any, name them.
TASK 2
Sketch the following graphs on the same set of axes: y  2  2 x  1 and 12 y   x  2 .
If any points ( x; y ) satisfy both equations, read off the known points.

TASK 3
Write the following equations in standard form and identify and name the graphs. Sketch each graph on a separate
set of axes. Clearly indicate all intercepts and critical points:

 93 
y
3.1  x if y  f ( x)
3.2 2 x2  4 y 2  1
3.3 6 x 2  48  3( x 2  y 2 )
