Group Assignment (Paper) for Freshman Students –NS Sec 5, 6, 7 & 52 (25%)
1. Discuss the contributions of anthropological knowledge, approaches and perspective in the
context of the contemporary world, in general and Ethiopia, in particular?
2. Write a brief description about Marriage, Family and Kinship (as ties that structure and
organize human social relationship), emphasizing on ‘Rules and Forms of Marriage’,
‘Functions of Marriage and Family’, ‘Kinship system and Rules of Descent’. Supporting your
description with empirical examples from different groups (ethnic/cultural/religious or
otherwise) in Ethiopia or abroad will incur you additional mark.
3. Discuss marginalization and vulnerability, and identify the different forms of marginalization
affecting different minorities & social groups along with the major causes and manifestations of
marginalization and approach to protect the rights of vulnerable and minority groups.
4. Make a conceptual and theoretical discussions about Ethnicity, emphasizing on the dominant
theoretical approaches (Primordialism, Instrumentalism and Social Constructivism) envisaged
to understand the nature and characteristics of ethnicity, ethnic identity and ethnic interaction (it
is invaluable to substantiate your discussion with examples from Ethiopia or otherwise).
5. Write a brief essay on ‘Customary Institutions of Dispute/Conflict Resolutions’ in Ethiopia;
focusing on their role, major characteristics, components (structures), strengths & limitations.
And, support your discussion with empirical examples from different groups in the country.

General Instructions
1. Please be informed that this is a written, group assignment given as part of your course work.
2. Organize yourself in a group of five students (if you already have a group, it can also work).
3. Read the above questions very carefully and write a brief essay as instructed in each of the
questions and make sure that your paper address the points emphasized in the questions.
4. You are expected to go through (intensively read) the course module and refer to other reference
materials in your library and/or online sources (books, articles, research papers & other related
internet sources) and list out the sources you used as “List of Reference Materials”.
5. The structure of report format – the final report of your group paper should have the following
sections: Cover page (containing, among other things, Section & list of group members along
with their ID No.), Table of Content, Introduction (general reflection about the
assignment/issues raised in the questions), Body (the main part, where each questions
addressed), General Summary and List of reference Materials.
6. Legibility, neatness and depth of your discussions will have its own value.
7. Cases of plagiarism will not be tolerated and may result in a serious consequence.
 Do not plagiarize others work and Do not let others to copy your work, either! If you
do, you will take full responsibility for the consequences on your grade.
8. The last date for submission is -Monday, 01 August, 2022.
Attention! Most of the points raised on the above questions might be included in your Final Exam
and all group members are expected to actively participate in the assignment.
