COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING

Prerequisite: None

Course Objectives:

1. Illustrate the role of computers in industrial manufacturing and the fundamental concepts
of computer graphics.
2. Acquire knowledge of geometric modeling techniques and their applications in
Computer-Aided Design (CAD).
3. Develop proficiency in using drafting and modeling software for product design.
4. Acquire knowledge of the basics of Numerical Control (NC) in manufacturing.
5. Interpret Group Technology concepts and the use of computers in process planning.
6. Infer importance of Computer-Aided Quality Control in manufacturing and inspection
processes.

UNIT I:

Introduction: Computers in Industrial Manufacturing, Product cycle, CAD / CAM Hardware,


Basic structure, CPU, Memory types, input devices, display devices, hard copy devices, storage
devices. Computer Graphics: Raster scan graphics coordinate system, database structure for
graphics modeling, transformation of geometry, 3D transformations, mathematics of projections,
clipping, hidden surface removal.

UNIT II:

Geometric modeling: Requirements, geometric models, geometric construction models, curve


representation methods, surface representation methods, modeling facilities desired.

UNIT–III

Drafting and Modeling systems: Basic geometric commands, layers, display control commands,
editing, dimensioning, solid modeling. Numerical control: NC, NC modes, NC elements, NC
machine tools, structure of CNC machine tools, features of Machining center, turning center,
CNC Part Programming fundamentals, manual part programming methods, Computer Aided Part
Programming.

UNIT–IV

Group Technology: Part family, coding and classification, production flow analysis, advantages
and limitations, Computer Aided Processes Planning, Retrieval type and Generative type.
UNIT–V

Computer Aided Quality Control: Terminology in quality control, the computer in QC, contact
inspection methods, noncontact inspection methods-optical, noncontact inspection methods non-
optical, computer aided testing, integration of CAQC with CAD/CAM.

Outcomes:

1. Illustrate the significance of computers in industrial manufacturing processes and


demonstrate a basic understanding of computer graphics principles.
2. Create basic geometric models using CAD software.
3. Create detailed designs with effective use of drafting and modeling tools.
4. Construct a program using NC and CNC principles for basic machining operations.
5. Demonstrate the use of Group Technology and Computer-Aided Processes Planning
tools for process optimization.
6. Outline the key terminologies in quality control, understand various contact and non-
contact inspection methods.
