INTRODUCTION
“For the children it is wrapped in wonder, for the elders, it is a
means of survival,” encapsulates the lives of the ragpickers in
Seemapuri, as depicted in the lesson “Lost Spring” . Seemapuri is
a slum in Delhi housing around 10,000 ragpickers, mostly
Bangladeshi refugees, who have lived there for over thirty years
without an identity or permits. These individuals scavenge
through waste for recyclables as a means of survival. Their living
conditions are overcro The wded, unhygienic, and lack basic
amenities like clean water and sanitation facilities. They face
hazardous working conditions and struggle with below-poverty-
line earnings, limited access to education and healthcare, and
cycles of generational poverty.
• Economic Struggles:
o Ragpickers in Seemapuri earn below the poverty line,
struggling to make ends meet.
o The lack of education and skill development
opportunities limits their chances of finding alternative
livelihoods.
o The cycle of generational poverty perpetuates as
children often follow in their parents’ footsteps,
engaging in ragpicking instead of pursuing education.
• Overview:
• Glass Industry:
o The glass industry in Firozabad has a long-standing
history and is a significant contributor to the local
economy. It has been a major source of employment for
the residents.
o The industry offers various employment opportunities,
ranging from glass manufacturing to glass cutting,
polishing, and decoration. It plays a crucial role in the
economic development of the region.
• Child Labor:
o These children are forced to work in hazardous
conditions, such as glass furnaces, where they are
exposed to high temperatures and harmful chemicals.
They are subjected to long working hours and are
denied their basic rights.
o Child labor in Firozabad harms children’s education
and well-being, depriving them of rights and causing
health issues.
• Interdependence:
o Ragpickers in Seemapuri and the Recycling Industry:
Ragpickers in Seemapuri play a crucial role in the recycling industry by
collecting recyclable materials from waste. These materials, including
paper and plastic, often find their way into the recycling chain, indirectly
supporting various industries, including the glass industry in Firozabad.
o The glass Industry in Firozabad and Employment
Opportunities:
Firozabad’s glass industry depends on a low-cost workforce, often
attracting impoverished individuals, including migrants from Seemapuri.
This interdependence reveals complex socio-economic ties between the
two regions, emphasizing the urgent need for holistic efforts to combat
poverty, enhance living conditions, and empower marginalized
communities in both areas.
