INS217E-STRENGTH OF MATERİALS I
HW-2

1) The system in the figure is discrete at point C and the gap width is .
a) Draw the normal force diagram
b) Since the force on the bar BC is -P/3, α.ΔT=?

2) All cables have axial rigidity EA, length 5L and the ratio of right triangles is 3, 4, 5. The cable
stretched as much as the gap () is tied to the top of the pole and then released. Determine the cable
forces and the angle of rotation of the pole. The gap is  << 5L.

3) In the structural system given in the figure, epoxy is used to

bond link AB and BC links together at B. Determine
a) the shearing stress in pin A,
b) the shearing stress in pin C,
c) the largest normal stress in link ABC,
d) the average shearing stress on the bonded surfaces at B, and
e) the bearing stress in the link at C.

4) The structural connection in the figure is exposed to a

force of P=240 kN. The maximum allowable stresses for bolts
𝜎𝐵 = 320 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝜏𝐵 = 120 𝑀𝑃𝑎, the maximum allowable
stresses for plates 𝜎𝑃 = 160 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝜏𝑃 = 120 𝑀𝑃𝑎.

Calculate d, 𝛿, b and a for safety and economy.
