The completion of this project was very much complex
and difficult than we conceived the idea of this project.
We faced many problems as well as constraints in
implementing it.
We had to deal with some hardware components that
needed help of professional experts from our Carpentry
shop, Machine shop and an engineering workshop from
Nababpur.
We are grateful to them.
By the grace of Almighty ,we were able to finish our
project successfully in due time.
We are also very thankful to our course teachers Partha
Kumar Das, Musanna Galib and Md. Rakib Hossain .
They provided us instructions, guidance and regularly
kept track of our project.
It was very helpful to finish our project in time.
Our classmates were very co-operative. They
encouraged us to overcome various hurdles.
Finally our collective effort, mutual understanding,
teamwork as well ensured our success.
We realized proper teamwork, sharing of knowledge
and experience can help us achieve greater goals.

The purpose of our project was to build a password
protected automatically operated Smart Door.
We developed our own system to fulfill those purposes.
Our device has four basic features: Password Verification,
Entry Counting, Door Lock-Unlock and finally Door Open-
Close system.
We ensured security with password verification system,
counting and allowing people to enter up to a certain
given value.
To reduce manual effort, we used automation for door
lock=unlock and door open-close system.

0
The name of our project is 'Smart Door Lock'.
We named it 'Smart' because it has password protection,
number counting of people entering as well as
automatically operated door lock-unlock & open-close
system.

Security is a big concern in certain places. A secured door

is a primary and important need there. Because of its
password protection system, our 'Smart Door Lock' can
ensure the safety and security of a house or the places in
a office where only authorized personnel have access.

0
Another important feature of our system is it can unlock
and open the door by itself and vice versa.
Thus it heavily reduces the manual effort in locking-
unlocking and opening-closing a door.

Firstly, it will take password from user. If password is
correct, it will want the amount of people entering as
input. Then stepper motor will start working and door
latch will be unlocked.

After that, the door will be opened with the help of a

wheel attached with a DC motor at the bottom of the
door.

A green LED will glow then to indicate people to enter.

When people start entering, the system will count the people

We use a buzzer for ensuring counting people. When anyone

25
Low Cost: The only costly part of our project is HSS
Door Latch lock and unlock mechanism where a rack has
been attached by welding and the pinion has been
attached with a stepper motor. This cost us 3500 taka.
Rest of the sensors is brought and structure is made at a
very cheap rate. The whole project has been finished at
a cost of 7000 taka only including some losses.

Small Power Required : Maximum voltage is 12 V

in our project which is required for the DC motor and
the load is 1 amp current. So the required power is 12
watt. Stepper motor is almost same. Rest of the sensors
work at less than 5 volt, and the load is in mili-ampere
scale. Hence power consumption here is negligible. So
total power consumption is almost 24 watt, which is
very small.

26
Easy Setup: The structure is very light in weight and
small in size. So this is suitable for any door.

Easy Maintenance: The calibration for the project

can be done very easily; the only requirement is a
laptop. So speed control, angle of rotation for the door
can be easily done. Also, password can be changed
instantly.

Suitable for Large House: As the door opens and

closes automatically, anyone knowing the password can
get into the home without others help. So there is no
rush for the people inside, when someone is at the
door

27
1. The welding process of rack with door latch is very
tough as one of the base metal is planar and the other
is cylindrical.

2. In case of any system failure, there is no backup

system included.

3. The LDR used in this system should always be kept in

a dark place

4. At the time of people count, LDR gives garbage

value.

5. If someone simultaneously enters & exits the door,

our system will not work properly

6. The rack & pinion set has to be lubricated for better

performance and less noise

28
Things to be Considered:

I. Minimizing cost is an important issue for final

product. We have used rack and pinion set of
HSS that has carried the most of our cost. If
mass production is done, it will be reduced.
Using cheap material like plastic instead of HSS
can minimize the cost.

II. If one man passes the LASER and comes back

immediately, the program will count two
people. Two pairs of LASER and LDR should solve
this problem for final product.

III. A backup system must be taken into

consideration in case of failure of this system.

IV. DC motor specification (i.e. torque) should be

chosen according to the weight of the gate and
also the friction force the wheel faces.

29
Security is nowadays an important and promising field in
modern technological developments from households to
corporate offices and many places.
A 'Smart Door Lock' can add a big measure of security
and convenience to day to day life as well as reduce
manual labor.
It is also necessary as an automation project. Through
our work, we attempted to develop such a system . It
can be further improved by integrating advanced
technologies to make it more safe, secured and
intelligent so that it can be used precisely where security
is a big issue.
