UNIT TEST -2: SOLUTION

XII STD
Time: ¾ hrs Marks: 20

General Instructions:
a) All the questions are compulsory. b) There are 10 questions in total.
c) Questions 1 to 10 are very short answer type questions and carry two marks each.

1. State Raoult’s Law for a solution containing volatile components. How does Roult’s law
become a special case of Henry’s law?
2. Henry’s law constant for the molality of methane in benzene at 298 K is 4.27 x 105 mm
Hg. Calculate the solubility of methane in benzene at 298 K under 760 mm Hg.
3. A 1.00 molal aqueous solution of trichloroacetic and (CCl3 COOH) is heated to its
boiling point. The solution has the boiling point of 100.88 oC. Determine the van’t Hoff
factor for trichloroacetic acid. (Kb for water = 0.512 K kg mol-1)
4. The partial pressure of ethane over a saturated solution containing 6.56 x 10-3 g of ethane
is 1 bar. If the solution contains 5.00 x 10-2 g of ethane then what shall be the partial
pressure of the gas?
5. A solution containing 30g of non-volatile solute exactly in 90 g water has a vapor
pressure of 2.8 kPa at 298 K. Further 18 g of water is then added to the solution, the new
vapor pressure becomes 2.9 kPa at 298 K. Calculate (i) molar mass of the solute (ii)
vapor pressure of water at 298 K.
6. Calculate the amount of KCl which must be added to 1 kg of water so that the freezing
point is depressed by 2 K. (Kf for water 1.86 kg mol-1).{ KCl - complete dissociation}
7. 0.1 mole of acetic acid was dissolved in 1 kg of benzene. Depression in freezing point of
benzene was determined to be 0.256 K. What conclusion can you draw about the state of
the solute in solution? [Given: Kf for benzene = 5.12 K/m.]
8. Calculate the freezing point depression expected for 0.0711 m aqueous solution of
Na2SO4. If this solution actually freezes at - 0.320oC, What would be the value of van’t
Hoff factor? (Kf for water is 1.86 oC mol-1).
9. (a) The molecular masses of polymers are determined by osmotic pressure method and not
by measuring other colligative properties. Give two reasons. (b) Explain why a solution of
chloroform and acetone shows negative deviation from Raoult’s law.
10. Why do gases always tend to be less soluble in liquids as temperature is raised?
Differentiate between molarity and molality for a solution. How does a change in
temperature influence their values?
