CHAPTER MENU
2.1 Wastewater Characteristics of Various Industries, 19
2.2 Wastewater Characteristics and Measuring Methodology, 38
Understanding wastewater characteristics is key for the design of any wastewater treat-
ment plants. In this chapter, the wastewater characteristics of various industries based on
the author’s global experience of 23 years in various industries are summarized.
cooling tower blowdown, floor washing, and laboratory cleaning activities. Details of mixed
raw effluent from technical units of agrochemical industries are summarized in
Tables 2.1–2.3. The quantity of effluent generation is approx. 2–5 m3/ton of production.
However, effluent characteristics and generation quantity depend on the type of product
manufactured.

Besides the above major sources of wastewater generation there are frequent leakages of
black liquor from pump glands and its improper handling, which contribute significant
color and pollution to the stream. Color of effluent from paper machines is blackish in
nature. The wastewater generated has the following impurities:
●● Suspended solids including bark particles, fiber, pigments, and dirt.
●● Dissolved colloidal organics like hemicelluloses, sugars, lignin compounds, alcohols, tur-
pentine, sizing agents, and adhesives such as starch and synthetics.
●● Color bodies, primarily lignin compounds and dyes.
●● Dissolved inorganics such as NaOH, Na2SO4, and bleach chemicals.
●● Thermal loads.
●● Toxic chemicals.
The quantity of effluent generation from pulp and paper industries per ton of paper pro-
duction is approx. 50–75 m3. However, effluent characteristics and generation quantity
depend on the type of pulp and paper industries operation and type of raw material used
(see Table 2.14).

product manufacturing and operation (see Tables 2.18–2.24). Normally, wastewater
generated from FMCG is in the range of 2–5 m3/ton of production.
