Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to apply for the Driver Development for 5G/6G SDR Hardware internship at
National Instruments. As a graduate of B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from NUST, the top
University of Pakistan, and a current M.Sc. student in Communications Engineering at TUM,
I am confident that my skills and experience make me an ideal candidate for this opportunity.
Throughout my B.Sc., I focused greatly on the practical applications of Engineering and got
even more engrossed in its delicacies. My undeterred passion for this field and my strong base
of mathematics and physics helped me ace courses such as “DSSP”, “Signals & Systems” and
“Advanced Control Systems”. The ambition of probing into electrical engineering to find
innovative and creative solutions to untapped problems also extended to my final year thesis
in which I worked on the problem of “Blind Signals”, signals from unknown sources whose
modulation schemes are not known at the receiver. To combat these, I designed an “Automatic
Modulation Classifier” that generated a higher accuracy relative to previous implementations
whilst using fewer labelled training samples. This was accomplished using Generative
Adversarial Networks (GANs) paired with a CNN discriminator. This AMC model was also
implemented and tested with the USRP X310 later during my work at DAT.
After completing my Bachelors, I worked as a System Integration Engineer in Digital
Automation Technology. “DAT” is a UAE-based authorized distributor & integrator of
National Instruments & Quanser. My role at DAT heled me gain a hands-on experience of
multiple technologies of NI that were focused on the wireless stream such as the USRP X310
and the PXI 5668 configuration. This experience, coupled with the competition of various key
courses on the NI’s learning portal such as LabVIEW Cores, FPGA & RT, allowed me to
complete my CLAD certification. In addition to the above, I also worked on RT systems such
as the Industrial Controller 3120 and the CompactRIO which allowed me to hone my skills at
Unix-based operating systems. My skills with Linux also allowed me to work with a customer
who was implementing the OpenBTS application on a USRP B210 coupled to a Linux-based
SoC for signal analysis.
I believe that my strong technical background linked to National Instruments, combined with
my passion for communication systems measurement and test, make me a strong fit for this
internship. I am excited about the opportunity to further develop my skills and knowledge at
National Instruments, and I am confident that my education and experience would make me
an asset to your team. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the
opportunity to further discuss how I can contribute to your organization.
Thanks & Regards,
Saad Aftab
