Introduction 1 / 7
Rules:

1 lectures: 4 hrs during first 5 weeks

2 labs: 4 labs Fall, 5 labs Spring
3 labs 60%: i) preparation and entrance exam ii) lab work,
measurements, recording, iii) analysis, report
4 bonus to lab grade: 5 pt lab notebook (follow the
rules, get 3 signatures of the lecturer)

Introduction 3 / 7
What is expected from the students:

Lectures - a) learn basic theory of experimentation, b)

1

learn the principles of uncertainty, c) integrate the

knowledge of engineering disciplines in the measurements
2 Labs: a) get prepared before the lab, b) measure carefully,
c) analyze insightfully, d) report correctly and clearly.
Our responsibility: to prepare you and provide the tools to be
able to design good experiments (i.e. correct result with
appropriate uncertainty), whether it is for the two future
undergraduate labs and for any research/engineering task.

Introduction 4 / 7
Course objectives

Understand complexity of accurate measurements

Understand and be able to estimate measurement
uncertainty
Be able to design the experiment, choose
instrumentation, consider extraneous parameters,
minimize uncertainty
Perform typical engineering measurements using
different sensors and instrumentation
Proper use of software for signal acquisition, analysis,
statistics and report: Python/Matlab, Excel, Word,
Labview

Introduction 5 / 7
What you need to know to succeed

theory: statistics, mechanics, dynamics, electronics, signal

processing, etc.
design of experiments, preparatory calculations;
choice of instrumentation, measurement system;
measurements, control, notebook;
analysis, statistics;
result, report: writing, graphics, presentation.

Introduction 6 / 7
What do we learn today

1 General info
2 Review of the topics for the first lab:
1 Measurements: classification, design, parameters,
variables, documentation
2 Uncertainty 101
3 Short overeview of basic knowledge related to
uncertainty:
1 Very basic statistics
2 Significant digits
