names
–Are you a Spaniard? –I asked him, surprised at the lack
of any Peninsular accent, or even an Hispanic American
one, in a man with such a surname.
—Horacio Quiroga, The Vampire.

Arabic characters
Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai, Beirut, Cairo, Alexandria, Tangiers, Casablanca, Fez.
Arabic names are used throughout the Muslim world, from the Maghreb to the heart of Asiam always subject to
dialectal or local modifications. This names are quite different from Western ones, but follow a fixed and recognizable
name + surname patron, sometimes (not always) with patronymics or nicknames inserted in-between.
In Muslim countries, believers of other religions often use Muslim names. The exception to this are some Christians,
who adopt Arabic-style names but subject to their faith (especially in Egypt) or European names, mostly French.

A relatively common type of Arabic nickname (that doesn’t appear in the table, because it replaces the “official”
name in its use) is the kunya, a respectful but familiar appellation that indicates the person is father or mother of a
notorious, important or very loved person. It’s composed of the the word Abu (father) or Umm (mother) + a personal

name or a complimentary nickname. A kunya can also be “figurative,” such as the pseudonym Abu Nidal, “father of the
struggle,” or Umm el Dunya, “mother of the world,” nickname of Cairo.

Brazilian characters
Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, São Paulo.
Brazilian names generally follow the Portuguese name norms, with a couple of peculiarities: first, surnames are much
more varied due to immigration to Brazil - second, the surname "accumulation" is usually shorter, if any, as it is
considered snob. The only surname in everyday use is the paternal one, along with only one of the personal names (if
there are several ones).

British characters
London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin, Sydney, Melbourne.
British characters have two names, but only one of them is daily used (usually the first one). Sometimes, when
writing their name, they will write the initial of the middle name between the first and last name. However, in official
documents, the full name is always used. Women takes their husband's last name at marriage, but they can recover their
maiden surname if divorced.

Bulgarian characters
Sofia.
Bulgarian name consists of a name, a patronymic and a single surname. The patronymic is created by adding the
suffix –ev or –eva to the name of the person's father, depending on the person’s gender. Thus, for example, two different
gender siblings whose father's name is Ivan Petrov would have their patronimic be Ivanev (brother) and Ivaneva (sister)
respectively.
Surname is also gendered. It’s feminine when it ends in –a, while the masculine always ends in consonant.
Following the example above, two siblings of different genders could be named Petrov and Petrova respectively.

Nomenclator 7
Chinese or Taiwanese characters
Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing.
Chinese name consists of a surname and a single name, each composed of one or two monosyllabic words written
with the traditional Hànzi ideograms and that make up, when combined, more complex concepts. The surname goes
before the personal name.
Personal name is used very little, reserved only for family and close acquaintances. That has originated China’s rich
tradition of pseudonyms, including childhood, formal or posthumous names, which has been somewhat lost throughout
the 20h century.
Chinese people living in another country, or who deal frequently with foreigners, adopt a name in the
corresponding foreign language while retainging their surname, altering the usual Chinese surname-name order if
necessary. If they marry, Chinese mainland women don’t adopt their husband's surname. Children generally inherit the
father's surname, although law indicates they can use the mother's if they want.
Interestingly, the Chinese don’t marry among people with the same surname, even if they aren’t relatives.

Chinese (Hongkonese) characters

Hong Kong.
Hong Kong names follow most of the rules for Chinese names, but with an important feature: Hong Kong people
usually take a foreign nickname (usually English) for regular use, but without official validity.
Hongkonese women, unlike mainland Chinese women, adopt their husband's last name if married.

Congolese characters
Brazzaville, Kinshasha, Lubumbashi, Mbuji-Mayi, Kananga.
The Congolese name is typically composed of a Christian name (i.e., French), a Congolese name (mainly of Lingala,
Kikongo or Kituba origin) and a Congolese surname. These names are common both in Republic of Congo and in
Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire. In this second country, having a middle name after the surname, a
common African custom, is more common than in the first. This name might be the name of an ancestor, the tribal clan
of the person or even some personal attribute, in a fashion very similar to the ancient Roman cognomen. When the
name needs to be simplified, only the first personal name and the surname are used.

8 Nomenclator
It should be noted that the name order described above belongs to the written language. When asking a Congolese
person their name directl, they will usually say their surname first and then her first name.

Czech or Slovak characters

Praga, Bratislava.
Czech and Slovak characters speak mutually understandable languages and share basically the same names. These
simply consist of a personal name followed by a last name. Women take their husbands’ surname if they marry.
As in other Slavic languages, surnames are gendered. When masculine, surname end up in consonant, in –y or in –a
without accentuation marks. In feminine, that last letter is replaced by the ending -ová. For example, Milan Filipek's sister
would be Hana Filipeková and David Svoboda's would be Adéla Svobodová.

Dutch characters
Amsterdam, Rotterdam.
Dutch characters have two names, only one of them used daily, in the same way as the British. However, the
complete name always appears in official documents.
If Dutch women marry, they traditionally add their husband's last name to theirs, creatig a compound one. If done,
law allows her to choose the order in which the surnames are added (for example, Roos Kuijpers-De Vries could be called
De Vries and be married to Mr. Kuijpers). However, these changes are not legally binding.

dominant language in the area. However, it must be remembered that Belgium isn’t only European Union’s capital, but
a true melting pot of citizens from all over the continent, and from Asia and Africa.
Flemish characters have two personal names, of which only the first one is used daily. The second is usually the same
of one of the grandparents. The complete name always appears in official documents.
In addition, the Belgian or Luxembourguese women doesn’t change their surname if married.

10 Nomenclator
Germanic characters
Berlin, Freiburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, Zürich.
These kind of names are used in Germany, Austria and part of Switzerland. Their basic structure is proper name +
surname. Compound names are common, but not universal. In this case, usually only one name (most of times the
second one), the so-called Rufname, is daily used. Of course, unlike in English names, they never use only the initial of
their middle name. In official documents, full name is always used.
In Germany, a married woman doesn’t have any legal obligation to adopt her husband's last name, but most do, or
even add it to her own maiden surname, creating a compound surname. Even in this second case, the children will
receive only the family name (father’s name). Swiss law is similar in this regard. In Austria, when a woman marries
instantly adopts her husband's last name although, since 2015, she can resort to a legal process if she wants to change it
back.

Greek characters
Athens, Thessaloniki.
Greek name consists of a name, a patronymic and a single surname, although the second isn’t used at all in daily life,
but only in official documents.
Greek surname is gendered. Ror women, the surname uses the genitive case of name’s declination, ending in –i or
in –ou. In masculine it ends in –s. For example, two brothers of different genders would be named Papadopoulos (male)
and Papadopoulou (female) respectively. Patronymic is always in genitive case (as a feminine surname).
Upon marriage, the Greek woman can adopt the husband's surname and change her patronymic to the husband's
name, being able to recover the maiden patronymic (but not the surname) if she becomes widowed. However, Greek law
allows women to ignore this traditional process, maintaining the wife's maiden surname.

Haitian characters
Port-Au-Prince.
There are two official languages in Haiti: French and Kreyòl Ayisyen (Haitian Creole), based on French, so personal
names are strongly influenced by this language.
Haitian women don’st adopt their husband surname if they marry. In any case, informal unions are not badly seen
in Haitian society, so marriage itself is only common among established social elites.

Hungarian characters
Budapest.
In Hungarian name, the surname stands before personal name, in a simple surname + personal name fashion, with
compound names being very rare.
Historically, married Hungarian women not only adopted her husband's surname, but the whole name, simply adding to it
the suffix -né! Although this practice is still legal, it isn’t mandatory and most married women retain their names.

12 Nomenclator
Indian characters
Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Ahmedabad.
Indian names are quite complex in its composition and order and, in fact, variy by region. In some places, for
example, they may contain patronymics, the place of birth and some traditional religious caste indications, but not a
surname in the "western" sense of the term. There are other additional complications: Hindues always have "familiar"
names that they only use at home, some write their own name and patronymic together (making a single word), etc... It’s
also customary to simply call anyone older than yourself "uncle" and "aunt", even if they are not from your family.
When married, Indian women usually change her patronymic to the husband's own name. However, there are such
bureaucratic complications to make the legal change that, although it’s done in practice, it often isn’t done officially.
The first table we propose is based on a somewhat simplified version of the Hindu names of northern and western
India. The second is appropriate for Sikhist religion characters. There are no specifically Sikh male or female personal
names, although the Sikhs can endow them with a gender using different pronunciations. In addition, the last names
Singh (male) and Kaur (female) are gendered. Although, according to some, Sikhs shouldn’t use another last name than
that, using a name of khalsa or religious clan as a "second last name"is very common.

Italian characters
Venice, Milan, Rome, San Marino, La Valetta.
Italian names are composed of a first name (or a compound name) followed by a single surname. In the case of a
compound name, unlike in English, the initial of the middle name is never used alone.
In addition, Italian married women don’t change their surnames, although they can legally request to join it with
her husband's one, as a compound surname. This practice is quite unusual.

the Patwa (Jamaican patois), the de facto daily Jamaican language.
In legal marriages, the woman adopts husband’s surname. In any case, the so-called consensual unions, in which no
official changes are made, are also common among the poor classes -i.e., the majority of the population.

the government of Japan. If a foreigner naturalizes Japanese, they must adapt their name to the Kanji alphabet or
change it to a traditional one.
In addition, Japanese wives adopt their husband's last name if they marry.

An outdated (but not necessarily forgotten) custom was naming the family’s sons according to their birth order.
Thus, Ichirō means "first son", Jirō "second son", Saburō "third son", Shirō "fourth", Gorō "fifth", Rokurō "sixth" and
Shichirō "seventh". As for the daughters, custom was naming them according to the season they were born in: Haru
(meaning "spring"), Natsu ("summer"), Aki ("autumn") and Fuyu ("winter").

Kenyan characters
Mombasa.
A Kenyan full name is typically composed of a Christian name (i.e. English), a Kenyan name (mainly of Kikuyu,
Swahili or Luo origin) and a Kenyan surname. When this name needs to be simplified, only the first personal name and
the surname are used.
Although this is a very usual structure, some prefer more traditional considered ones, that include a middle name
after the surname, common to various African nations (it is also practiced, for example, in Congo contries).

In Korean name, surname stands before personal name. One thing Koreans usually do that is very surprising for
foreigners is undertaking the legal process to change their name for a more “fashionable” one, like the ones used by the
young people at the moment, at any moment of their life. The lists include some (few) “outdated” names (as of today),
but almost all of them are quite up to date.
Korean women don’t adopt their husband's last name if they marry, although children receive their father's surname.

Latin American names generally follow the Spanish name norms, although they are even more influenced by Anglo-
American culture than European ones, which is a lote to say.
Indigenous or Creole language names vary by country: they may be Mayan in Guatemala, Belize and the Yucatan
Peninsula, Nahuatl in most of Mexican territory, or could be others. In some areas is also possible to find Arabic names
due to immigration.

Lima, La Paz, Santiago, Montevideo, Buenos Aires.
Latin American names generally follow the Spanish name norms, with the exception of Argentina, where only the
father’s surname is used. Election of personal names is even more influenced by Anglo-American culture than in the
European Spanish case.
Indigenous language names vary by country: they may be Guarani in Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and Argentina,
Mapuche in Argentina and Chile, Quechua in Perú and Bolivia, or could be others.

Polish characters
Krakow, Gdańsk.
In Polish names, the personal name goes before the surname. Although compound names are common among
Poles, they usually use only one of their names. They never use only the initial of their middle name. In any case, in
official documents they always use the full name.
By law, the Polish personal name must indicate the bearer’s gender. In addition, also the surnames ending in vowel
are gendered. Thus, for example, two different gender siblings would be named Kowalski (male) and Kowalska (female)
respectively. As a general rule, it can be assumed that surnames and personal names (except some archaic ones) ending in
–a are feminine.
By tradition, a woman takes the husband's surname if she marries, although the law is quite flexible in this, allowing
her to keep her own or to add the husband's to his maiden surname, forming a compound surname. If the latter is
done, their children will receive the new compound name. In any case, Polish people never use last names formed by
more than two words.
Between 15th and 17th centuries, Polish nobles (szlachta) used the ancient Romans’ trinominal system, although this
custom has been completely abandoned.

Lisboa.
Portuguese names are quite complex and may seem very long to foreigners. This names consist of a personal name,
which can be compound, one or two maternal surnames, one or two paternal surnames (which are the last ones listed)
and, sometimes, one or two more grandparental surnames. In any case, in both public and social life only the father's last
name and one of the personal names (if several) are used. Official documents always include the whole name.
Although Portuguese characters (male or female, but specially the latter) can add their spouse's surname to their
“original” ones if married, it isn’t obligatory nor too common (a married woman could this way “collect” more than six
surnames in her name, with all the inconveniences that this would entail).

Bucarest.
Although compound names are very common among Romanians, they usually only use one of them, if they have
several ones. However, unlike in English, they never use only the “middle name” initial. In official documents the full
name always appears, with the surname written before the personal name, although the reverse order is usually followed
in daily life.
A Romanian woman takes her husband's surname if she marries. The law is quite flexible in this regard, but custom
is maintained by tradition... and, in any case, she could recover their maiden surname if divorced.

Russian name consists of a personal name, a patronymic and a surname. Addressing people only by their first name
denotes informality, while using both first name and patronymic is a sign of respect. In official documents, the full name
is always used.
In Russian name not only the personal name is gendered, but also the patronymic and the surname are. Patronymic
consists of the name of the father + the suffix –evna or –ovna for feminine names or the suffix –ovich for masculine
names. For example, two sibilings of different gender whose father's name was Ivan could be named respectively Anna
Ivanovna and Dimitriy Ivanovich.
As for the last name, when it is in feminine form it ends in –a, while the masculine form always ends in consonant.
Following the same example as before, the siblings could be named Petrova and Petrov respectively.
Adoption of their husband’s surname by Russian married woman was established as a custom in a relatively modern
era, although it isn’t mandatory. In fact, Russian law allows the husband to adopt the wife’s surname of the wife or the
retaining of both’s original surnames.

Apartheid left in South Africa an awful legacy of separation that has only begun to be resolved, despite the birth, in
the 21st century, of an interracial South African culture. This heritage, combined with the large number of languages
spoken in South Africa (of which no less than eleven are official languages), makes the use of several different tables
necessary, depending on the type of character which name we want to generate.

Madrid, Barcelona, Toledo, Seville.
Since 15th century, Spaniards have two surnames: first, that of the father and second, that of the mother. This,
added to the commonality of compound personal names, makes Spaniards’ names seem very long to foreigners.
However, in daily life Spanish people use only their first surname, and usually (not always) one of their names, if several.
When addressing someone by their surname, only the first one is used. In official documents, the full name is always
used.
In addition, Spanish woman doesnot change her surnames if marries.

Rom and calé surnames

The following surnames are common, but not necessarily exclusive, of Gypsy families. They can be included in a
character’s name to suggest or underline their connection with this ethnic group. The calés are the gypsies from Western
Europe origin (Portugal, France, Spain) while the Roma hail from Eastern Europe (especially Slovakia, Serbia, Romania
and Hungary), so the character’s personal name will be appropriate for those countries languages.

Hebraic surnames
These Surnames have originated in European Jewish communities, are common in them, or are traditionally related
with them. They can be included in a character’s name to suggest their kinship connection with this group (a connection
maybe unexistent, since Jews don’t form an ethnic group).
