1.0 PURPOSE

The objective of this procedure is to provide general guidelines on carpentry and joinery
works

2.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Managers and Supervisors must ensure that the staff follow and observe the
safety requirements.
2. Employees are to adhere to the company’s safe work procedures.
3. Site supervisor and HSE personnel shall ensure that all the HSE requirements are
implemented prior to start the demolition works.
4. Project manager is responsible for maintaining the safety and progress of the work.
He shall ensure that he has the latest drawings of the project and have updated
information from the Engineer regarding project.

3.0 HAZARDS

 Slip Trip Fall.


 Bodily injuries
 Cut & Stab by sharp and protruding Object
 Falling from height
 Injury from incorrect Manual handling.
 Contact dermatitis from exposure to wet concrete and dust.
 Injury from machine hazards
 Electrocution

4.0 PROCEDURES

4.1 Working at height (Usage of ladder)

i. When working at height, site operatives must ensure that the working area is
cleared on a period basis to ensure that there is continually a clear and safe
working area to prevent slips trips and falls.
ii. Check ladder before use for any obvious damage or defects such as loose or
missing rungs.
iii. Check pulleys and locking gears on extension ladders.
iv. Inspect safety feet to ensure they are clean and in good condition.
v. Defective ladders are not to be used.
vi. Set angle of ladder at approximately 1:4 (1 out and 4 up).
vii. Place ladder on a firm and level footing. Don’t rest the ladder against an
unsecured or moveable object.
viii. Secure the ladder at top and or bottom or alternatively, a person is to be
stationed at the base to prevent movement whilst being used.
ix. Access ladder shall be secured and extended at least 1 metre from the landing
and handhold

x. Step ladder to have the spreader fully opened and engaged.


xi. Extension ladders not to be separated for use of single lead ladders.
xii. Overlap of sections of an extension ladder to be at 3.5 rungs.

4.2 Usage of hand tool and electrical power tools

I. Familiarize with the hand and power tools before using it.
II. Maintain eye contact on the work when using these tools.
III. Hold the handle of the tools firmly. Do not remove the handle if applicable
unless it poses additional hazard due to the nature of the job.
IV. Secure the portable tools before using them in an elevated level. Example Tie –
off portable hand tools to the hands by means of a lanyard. If the tool is too
heavy than it shall be tied onto a rigid point.
V. Return all tools to its designated location after use. Do not leave them
unattended on the floors.
VI. Use the correct tools for the given work.
VII. Do not by-pass “Deadman” switch, which will off the power tools when it slips
off from the user’s hand.

6.0 Personal Protective Equipment

• Dust mask

7.0 Emergency

• Event of injury seek medical attention / Call 995 for ambulance


• Report supervisor
• Event of injury seek medical attention / Call 995 for ambulance
• Report to safety department & supervisor
• Shout for Help
• Gives immediate attention to the injured and apply first aid procedure if possible
