God demonstrated his love through giving his only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins so that we may have eternal life. The Son willingly gave up his life to save us when we were unable to save ourselves. We should live lives of generous giving, just as the Macedonian churches exemplified in exceeding expectations with their gifts despite being in severe poverty, because God richly gave his Son for us through his poverty.

Romans 5:6-8 MSG 6-8Christ arrives
right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do any- thing to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do any- way. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.

4. Us living a life of generous giving.
2 Corinthians 9:1-9 NIV 1And now,
brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 5And they ex- ceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. 6So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7But since you ex- cel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnest- ness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. 8I am not com- manding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 9For you know the grace of our Lord Je- sus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
