Headline :
 A newspaper headline is a very short summary of a news report. It
normally appears in large letters above the report. The grammar of
headlines is often non-standard and they can be difficult to read.
Headlines in news are concise, eye-catching titles or phrases that
provide a snapshot of the main information in a news story, aiming
to engage readers and give them quick overview of the article's
content.

Purpose of headline :
It’s purpose is to quickly capture the attention of readers because
headlines are titles that appear before and article, they are often the deciding
factor regarding whether a reader clicks on an article and therefore, are most
enticing when they are persuasive.

1. Direct headline :
 Direct headlines clearly states the purpose of an article. It usually
involves facts in the article to summarize the overall idea. Readers know
exactly what they are going to read or see when you use a direct
headline.
Example:
"New Study Shows Benefits of Exercise for Heart Health"
"Tech Company Launches Latest Smartphone Model"

2. Indirect headline :
Indirect headlines takes a subtle approach by hinting at the main point of an
article. Since it doesn't directly state the key idea, it targets a reader's curiosity
to discover what the article is about.

Example:

“The Journey of a Lifetime Awaits”

“The Secret Ingredient to Flawless Skin Revealed!”


3. News Headline :
News headlines make important announcements about a company or its
products. Journalists often use these types of headlines in news articles to
efficiently share recent information with the public.

Example:

“Local Hero Rescues Family from Burning Building”

4. How – to headline :
How-to headline is a type of headline teaches readers ways to learn a new skill or
solve a problem through an outline of steps. To write a how-to headline, writers start
with the phrase “how to,” followed by the action they want their readers to learn. It
also helps highlight why that particular article might benefit them.

Examples-

“How To Drive in a Foreign Country Like a Local”

“How to incorporate your company”


5. Question headline :
 Question headlines poses a question to readers with the intention of providing
the answer within the article. These tend to be topics consumers may be
interested in regarding a company's products or brand.

Example:

“What are the key factors in climate change?”

“How does the human brain process emotions?”

6. Command headline :
Command headlines tell readers what to do or what they can learn by reading an article.
Companies typically use this type of headline when creating an advertisement. Most
command headlines start with a strong action verb.

Examples -

“Simplify Your Wardrobe With This New Technique”

“Clear The Clutter In Your Closet With These Organization Techniques”


7. The ‘Reason – Why’ headline :
 Reason why headlines” generally refer to the underlying rationale or purpose
behind a news headline or the motivation for a specific headline. Headlines
are meant to capture the essence of a news story and pique the reader’s
interest, so the “reason why” a particular headline is chosen is often related
to the significance, impact, or novelty of the story it represents.

Examples –

“Local Hero Rescues Stranded Kitten from Storm Drain.”

“Breaking: Earthquake Devastates City.”

8. Emotional headline :
Emotional headlines typically target either a positive or negative
feeling to encourage an audience to read an article. To do this, writers
use powerful words such as affordable or stressed.
Example : Heartwarming Reunion: Lost Dog Finds His Way Back
Home After 2 Years."
9. Wordplay headline :
A wordplay headline uses a creative formation of words and phrasing,
typically in the form of a pun or irony. Companies often use these
headlines when trying to make a less important topic amusing.
Example :
‘Local Auto races hits bump in the road’

10. Brand name headline :


 Brand name headlines use recognizable organizations to compare
a company's business or products to its competitors. This can be
helpful for new businesses trying to participate in a similar market as
a more established company.
Example :
 "Nike: Just Do It and Take Your Fitness to the Next Level!"

11. Best headline :


Best headlines rank certain items above others. These can attract
readers who look for top-rated content, such as the best
restaurants to try or the best computer to buy.
Example :
Srinagar's Annual Tulip Festival Blooms with Vibrant Colors and Joy!"
12. Two – Part headline :
 A two-part headline uses a punctuation mark, such as a colon, em dash
or parentheses to combine two ideas. Usually, both parts of these
headlines can stand alone, but together, they increase the chances of
capturing a reader's attention.
 For example: "1. "Breaking: New Study Reveals Surprising Health Benefits of
Chocolate!" 2. "Expert Tips: How to Incorporate Chocolate into a Healthy
Diet!"
13. Relational headline :
Relational headlines connect a reader to the subject of an article by
using second-person language. Relating the topic to the reader helps
them become interested in reading and discovering how this article can
help them.
Example: "1. "Celebrity Chef Opens New Restaurant, Invites Local Food
Bloggers for Exclusive Tasting!" 2. "Foodies Rejoice: Get Ready to Savor
the Delectable Delights of Srinagar's Culinary Scene!"

14. Location – Specific headline :


Location-specific headlines attract readers by making them feel
included in knowledge only a select group of people would know.
These headlines focus on something that people in a particular area
share in common.
 Example:
 “Discover the Rich History and Culture of Srinagar’s Mughal
Gardens!”
15. Challenging beliefs headline :
 Challenging beliefs headline is headline of a news article or topic
that challenges the widely accepted beliefs and ideas of people.
These type of headlines spark interest in people and make the
readers consider a different perspective. It helps the people to see
the topic from a different angle. These type
of headlines challenge what most people believe.
Examples:
Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?
Are electric cars truly environmentally friendly?

16. Confrontational headline :


Confrontational headlines are headlines that grab the attention of the readers.
These type of headlines use strong language and make bold statements to
provoke the people. These headlines use strong language to emphasize the
seriousness of the issue. These headlines provoke the reader to take an action or
think deeply about the issue.

We should save the planet before it is too late.
17. The ‘Backed – by – Science’ headline :
 The backed by science headline is used to tell the people that the
information in the topic is supported by scientific evidence and
research.
Examples:
The benefits of exercises proven by science
Effects of meditation supported by scientific research.

18. Testimonial headline :


Testimonial headlines are a type of headline in which satisfied customers
and users, promote a product or service.
People trust these headlines because these headlines show the positive
experience of other people. These headlines aim to build trust and
credibility.
Examples:
How our innovative products that are changing lives of people.
How Our Home Renovation Service Made Dreams Come True.
19. Background headline :
 Background headline is the type of headline that starts with the
general overview of the news story. This type of headline is divided
into two parts. The first part of the headline introduces you to the
topic. The second part of the headline elaborates and explains the
topic.
Examples:
Healthy Lifestyle: Small Changes, Big Benefits
Sustainable Living: Preserving Resources and Protecting Nature
