ExaGrid Tiered Backup Storage

Supports over 25 Backup Applications and Utilities

Customer environments are made up of many backup approaches, backup applications, and
utilities. Each disk-based backup approach supports them in different ways. Customers may
have any number of backups occurring in their environment, including traditional backup
applications for physical server backups, VMware, Nutanix,Hyper-V, direct- to-disk SQL dumps,
Oracle RMAN direct backups, and specific UNIX utilities such as UNIX TAR.

To save storage, data deduplication is used to only store the changes from backup to backup.
Some backup applications perform deduplication in the backup application. Usually that
deduplication is around 2:1 to 5:1 as data deduplication is too compute intensive to do in the
backup or media server. In order to save additional storage, data deduplication at the appliance
level can greatly reduce backup storage.

Legacy, data deduplication appliances perform the deduplication inline which greatly slows
down the backups. In addition, the data is only stored in deduplicated format which greatly
reduces restore performance. Lastly, they are scale-up which only adds storage but no
additional resources resulting in a backup window that grows as the data grows.

ExaGrid’s Tiered Backup Storage employs a front-end disk-cache Landing Zone. Backups are
sent to the Landing without any inline deduplication so that backups are fast. The most recent
backups are stored it the native backup application format so that the restores are fast. In
parallel, the data is deduplicated into a second tier repository for long term low-cost retention
storage. In addition, ExaGrid can take in deduplicated from Veeam and Commvault and further
deduplicated their deduplicated data. Lastly, ExaGrid is scale-out which adds all compute
resources with capacity resulting in a fixed-length backup window as the data grows.
