Greets and identifies the patient
Introduce self and gives a brief explanation about the procedure
Verifies the request.
Perform hand hygiene before patient contact
Choose a finger that is not cold or edematous for the puncture site. If
all fingers are cold, warm the hand 3 minutes with a warm washcloth
or heel warmer.
Select the appropriate containers for blood collection
Clean the puncture site with alcohol, and let the area dry
Prepare the puncture device for use
Massage the lower portion of the finger while avoiding the puncture
site to stimulate blood flow.
Puncture the skin with the disposable puncture device, dispose of the
device into a sharp container
Wipe away the first drop of blood with a sterile dry cotton or gauze
Collect the sample in the chosen container. Touch only the tip of the
collection tube to the drop of blood. Blood flow is encouraged if the
puncture site is held in a downward angle and gently pressure
applied to the finger.
Hold cotton or have the patient hold cotton to the puncture site until
bleeding has stopped.
Seal the sample container
Anticoagulant samples should be inverted 8 to 10 times
Apply a bandage to the puncture site
Label the collection containers
Dispose the bio hazardous waste into their proper container
Perform hand hygiene after patient contact
