images, etc. will not be accepted and we will give zero marks correspond to these assignments.

Question No. 1 10 marks

Consider polynomials.
2
P ( x )=2 x −3 x +1
q ( x )=3 x 2−4 x +5
2
r ( x )=x + 11
(a) Determine whether the set of polynomials { P ( x ) , q ( x ) , r (x)} is linearly
independent or not.
(b) Find a linear dependence relation among P ( x ) , q ( x ) , r (x)

Solution:

Let a P ( x ) , bq ( x ) , cr (x ) be equal to 0

a P ( x )+ bq ( x )+ cr ( x )=0

a ( 2 x 2−3 x+ 1 ) +b ( 3 x 2−4 x +5 )+ c ( x 2 +11) =0

( 2 a x 2−3 ax +a ) + ( 3 b x 2−4 bx+5 b ) + ( c x 2+11 c ) =0

2 2 2
2 a x −3 ax +a+3 b x −4 bx +5 b+ c x +11 c=0

( 2 a x 2+ 3 b x2 +c x 2 )+ (−3 ax−4 bx ) + ( a+5 b+ 11c )=0

Coefficient of x 2 :
2
x ( 2 a+3 b +c )=0

( 2 a+3 b+ c )=0 ------ (1)

Coefficient of x :
x (−3 a−4 b )=0

(−3 a−4 b )=0 ---------- (2)

( a+ 5 b+11c )=0 ----- (3)

From equation 2 taking value of a:

−4 b
a=
3

Putting value of a in equation 3:

−4 b
+5 b +11c=0
3
−4 b+15 b
+11c=0
3
11b
+ 11c=0
3
−11b
11c=
3
−11b
c= ×11
3
−b
c=
3

Now putting value of a and c in equation 1:

2(
−4 b
3
)+3 b+
−b
3 ( )
=0

−8 b 9 b b
+ − =0
3 3 3

b
[ −8 9 1
+ − =0
3 3 3 ]
b=0

Putting value of b in equation 2:

−3 a−4 (0)=0
−3 a−0=0
a=0

Putting value of a and b in equation 1:

2 ( a ) +3 ( 0 )+ c=0
c=0

(a) As a, b and c are equal to 0 then they are linearly independent.

(b) They are linearly independent so there is non-trivial dependency relation
among them.
