Constant sincere effort was made to
maintain the animal health of the Zoo. Besides a
Zoo Biologist, a Research Assistant and a Zoo
Educator were appointed during this financial year
‘to monitor the records, enclosure enrichment, and
behavioral data of the inmates etc. and fulfil
educational objectives of the Zoo respectively.
Fascinating greenery, gardening and
landscaping added attraction to the visitors of the
Zoo. This year the 200 was closed for a few
months due to Covid-19 restrictions. The annual
footfall during the opening months in 2021-2022 is
around 73 lac.

History of the Zoo
Since its
founding on
September 24,
1875, the
Alipore
Zoological
Garden has
gone through
numerous
phases.
Initially, the
inhabitants of
Kolkata were
generous in
their support
of the Zoo's
establishment, both financially and by donating
animals from their own collections to the Zoo.
Ram Brahma Sanyal (1851-1908),
the first Indian superintendent of
Alipore Zoo.
‘After then, land development began, and animal
homes were built to house the animals. The first
animal house built within the Zoo was "Mullick
House," which was funded by Raja Rajendra
Mullick Bahadur, the first Indian patron. This house
was home to fowls and pheasants, which began
breeding as early as February 1876. Following
Mullick House, Burdwan House, now known as an
‘open air moated enclosure for lions, was built at a
cost of RS35,000/-, with the Maharaja of Burdwan
donating the entire sum. Other animal
houses/enclosures developed over time, each
bearing the name of a kind donor.
Schwendler and the famed botanist George King
served on an honorary governing committee that
‘oversaw the park's early operations. Ram Brahma
Sanyal, the zoo's first Indian superintendent, did
much to boost the zoo's reputation and achieved
good captive breeding success at an era when
such endeavours were uncommon. A live birth of
02
the rare Sumatran Rhinoceros in 1889 was one of
the zoo's many successes. The following
pregnancy in captivity took place in 1997 at the
Cincinnati Zoo, but it resulted in a miscarriage. In
2001, the Cincinnati Zoo finally reported a live
birth. Sanyal, who published the fist handbook on
captive animal keeping, made Alipore Zoo a
pioneer among zoos in the 19th century and early
part of the 20th century. For its time, the zoo had
an extraordinarily high scientific quality.
After the establishment of Central Zoo Authority
in India in the year 1992, open air moated
enclosures for primates, white tiger, Indian
elephants Indian lions and mugger, gharial & salt
water crocodile were constructed with the
financial help of Central Zoo Authority. During this
petiod, remodeling of open air moated enclosure
for hippopotamus was also carried out with the
financial assistance of Government of West
Bengal.
Since shifting of management of the Zoological
Garden, Alipore from the Management
Committee to the West Bengal Zoo Authority in
the month of August, 2009, _ several
developmental activities started at the Zoo and
because of those activities face of the zoo
changed enormously. Several outlived animal
house like “Echidna House”, “Balaram House”,
“Kiosk House’, “Jungle Fowl Enclosure’, “Cat
Cage’, “Leanto Shed” etc. were demolished and
new enclosures are built. Also species specific
enrichment work has been done for different
enclosures.ABOUT US
