an electronic card
that is used to add
extra functionality to
a computer.
▪ Supporting cards also
known as Expansion
cards, Add-on cards
or interface cards.
HISTORY OF SUPPORTING CARDS

▪ The First supporting


slot was introduced in
1973 by Micral N.
▪ It was launched to add
features and
functionality to the
first microcomputer.
SUPPORTING SLOT

▪ A Supporting slot is a
socket on the
motherboard that is
used to insert a
supporting card which
provides additional
features to a computer
such as sound, video,
advanced graphics,
ethernet or memory.

Component
Interconnect (PCI
SLOT)
(ii) Industry Standard
Architecture (ISA
SLOT)
(iii) Accelerated Graphic

SOUND CARD

(i) A sound card is an


internal supporting
card that provides
input and output of
audio signals to and
from a computer
under control of
computer programs.
(ii) Sound card is also
known as audio card.
VIDEO CARD
(i) A Video card is a
supporting card which is
used for generating
images to a visual display
such as a computer
monitor or laptop screen.
(ii) A video card is also called
a graphic card or display
card.
(iii) It allows higher quality
graphics and better
speeds like 3D and 2D
graphics.
NETWORK INTERFACE CARD

(i) A network card is a


supporting card
which allows a
computer to connect
to a computer
network such as a
local area network or
wide area network.
(ii) It is also called LAN
adapter.
USB CARD

(i) A USB (Universal


Serial Bus)
Supporting card is
used to provide
additional connection
ports to a computer
by connecting the
card to the
motherboard.
FIREWIRE CARD

(i) A Firewire Card is a


supporting card that
allows a firewire
device to be
connected to a
computer.
(ii) Firewire also known
as IEEE 1394 Interface
connection.
MODEM CARD

(i) A Modem card is an


internal type of
modem that is insert in
the PCI slot of a
motherboard.
(ii) A modem is a
communications device
that allows a computer
to send and receive
data through
telephone or cable
lines.
TV TUNER CARD

(i) A TV tuner is a
supporting card that
allows television
signals to be received
by a computer.
(ii) The card contains a
tuner and a analog-to-
digital converter along
with demodulation and
interface logic which
helps to receive the
signals of a television.

▪ There are various features of supporting cards such as:-
(i) A sound card provide functionality to achieve high quality
sound.
(ii) A video card provides higher quality graphics capability
and better speeds like 3D and 2D graphics.
(iii) USB Card is used to provide additional connection ports
to a computer.
(iv) A TV tuner cards is used to recording television programs.
(v) Firewire provides a single plug and socket connection in
which up to 63 devices can be attached with data transfer
speeds up to 400 mbps(megabits per second).
