ENGINEERING MECHANICS LAB MANUAL

Experiment 5.
Determine the tension in a string loaded at different points:

Objectives:
The experiment is performed to calculate the tension in the strings of apparatus. The weight is
suspended on both outter ends of apparatus and some more weight is suspended in thre
middle of string which is slightly places away fron central point.

Apparatus:
1. Pulleys .
2. Strings.
3. Weights.
4. Measuring tapes.
5. Trinangular adjustable pulley boards.

Figure:
In this figure there is an appartus named sag and tension appartus in which there are two
triangles suspended on the wall with adjustable pulleys on both sides there is a single sting
which passes from the both pulleys and weight is suspended on both sides of the pulley which
is attached with strings then an other weight is suspended almost in the center of the string to
produce tension.

Procedure/Theory:
• First we checked the apparatus then we adjust the strings over pulleys.
• Then we hung some weight on both sides of the string to produce some tension as
shown in (Figure 1).
• Then we suspended an other weight to produce tension is the center of string that
makes a triangle shape but we move the weight slightly left as shown in (Figure 2).
• Then we took the distance from one pivot point to the central weight from both sides
as given in the (Figure 3).
• Then we took distance of upper straight sting as shown in (Figure 4).
• After collecting all the data we calculated the tension in every string of the apparatus.

Readings:
P1 150 g.
P2 150 g.

Calculations:
To find the tension theoratically by using the formula & further calculations:

4|P a g e
Calculating fx :
∑fx = 0:
-T1 cos(15.64) + T2 cos(22.11) = 0
T1 cos(15.64) = T2 cos (22.11).
T1 = 0.96T2.
Calculating fy :
T1 sin(15.64) + T2 sin (22.11) – 1000 = 0
0.25T2 + T20.37 = 1000
T2 = 161.29 .
T1 0.96(161.29)
T1 = 154.83.
T1 = 154.83 T2 = 161.29
P1 = 150 P2 = 150

To find the tension experimentally by using the formula & further calculations:

Calculating Q1 and Q2:
Q1: Q2:
= Cos Q1 = 65 / 67.5. = Cos Q2 = 53.5 / 57.75
Q1 = 15.64. Q2 = 22.11

To find the uncertainty of theoretical & experimental values by using the formula:
𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆−𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆
Uncertainty = x 100%
𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆

T1 = 154.83. T2 = 161.29.
P1 = 150. P2 = 150.
Uncertainty: 3% Uncertainty: 7%

Conclusion:
