3 Definitions
3.1 High-intensity discharge (HID) lamp
The electric discharge lamp in which the light-producing arc is stabilized by wall
temperature and the arc has a bulb wall loading in excess of 3 watts per square centimeter;
lamps include groups of lamps known as high-pressure mercury, metal halide and high-
pressure sodium lamps.
6/15
3.8 Color temperature
The temperature of a Planck radiator whose radiation has the same chromaticity as that
of a given stimulus
3.11 HV lamp
The lamp with voltage range between 70 V and 180 V
3.13 Ballast
The device connected between the supply and one or more discharge lamps which serve
mainly to limit the current of the lamp(s) to the required value
3.15 Lamp-holder
The device which holds the lamp in position, usually by having the cap inserted in it, in
which case it also provides the means of connecting the lamp to the electric supply

5 Requirements
5.1 Required structure
9/15
5.1.6 Insulation resistance
Lamps where the metal shell of the cap can be touched after insertion into the holder
shall have an insulation resistance between the metal shell of the cap and the pin(s) or
contacts of not less than 2 MΩ.
10/15
5.2.4 Reference ballast characteristics
The ballast for the lamp shall comply with the characteristics in the Table 5 of this
specification.

5.2.6 Efficiency
The efficiency of the lamp shall be stated by the supplier.
5.2.7 Life
(a) The life of the lamp shall be stated by the supplier.
(b) The life of the lamp shall not be less than 12,000 hours.
11/15
5.2.10 Lamp stability with rapidly reduced supply voltage
The lamp shall not extinguish if the supply voltage falls from 100 % to 90 % of the rated
supply voltage in not more than 0.5 s and remains at that value for at least 5 s.
6 Tests
6.1 Type tests
The type tests shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant clauses of IEC
standards, and at least below tests shall be passed.
(a) Dimensions: 5.1.1 of this specification
(b) Creepage distance: IEC 60061-4
(c) Lamp starting test: 7.1 of IEC 60662
(d) Lamp warm-up test: 7.2 of IEC 60662
(e) Electrical characteristic test: 7.4 of IEC 60662
(f) Extinguishing voltage test: 7.5 of IEC 60662
