1 Scope and service conditions


1.1 Scope
(a) This specification covers the high-pressure sodium vapor lamps (hereinafter referred
to as the lamps) for general lighting purposes.
(b) This specification also covers the ballasts and the starting device for the lamps.

1.2 Service conditions

1.2.1 Normal service conditions


(a) Ambient air temperature
- Maximum ambient air temperature: 55 ºC
- Minimum ambient air temperature: -40 ºC
(b) Maximum altitude: 1,000 m

1.2.2 Unusual service conditions


For installation in a place where environmental conditions are out of the normal
conditions, IEC 60721 series should be specified.

2 Normative references
The lamps shall conform to the latest edition of following international standards:

3 Definitions
3.1 High-intensity discharge (HID) lamp
The electric discharge lamp in which the light-producing arc is stabilized by wall
temperature and the arc has a bulb wall loading in excess of 3 watts per square centimeter;
lamps include groups of lamps known as high-pressure mercury, metal halide and high-
pressure sodium lamps.

3.2 High-pressure sodium (vapour) lamp


The high-intensity discharge lamp in which the light is produced mainly by radiation
from sodium vapor operating at a partial pressure of the order of 10 kilopascals

3.3 Nominal value


The approximate quantity value used to designate or identify a lamp

3.4 Rated value


The quantity value for a characteristic of a lamp for specified operating conditions; the
value and the conditions are specified in this standard, or assigned by the manufacturer or
responsible supplier.

3.5 Lamp starting voltage


The r.m.s. voltage at lamp terminals at which the lamp starts

3.6 Luminous flux (lm)


Quantity derived from radiant flux by evaluating the radiation according to its action
upon the CIE standard photometric observer

3.7 Luminous intensity (of a source, in a given direction)


Quotient of the luminous flux leaving the source and propagated in the element of solid
angle containing the given direction, by the element of solid angle

3.8 Color temperature
The temperature of a Planck radiator whose radiation has the same chromaticity as that
of a given stimulus

3.9 Color rendering


The Effect of an illuminant on the color appearance of objects by conscious or
subconscious comparison with their color appearance under a reference illuminant

3.10 Color rendering index


Measure of the degree to which the psychophysical color of an object illuminated by the
test illuminant conforms to that of the same object illuminated by the reference illuminant,
suitable allowance having been made for the state of chromatic adaptation

3.11 HV lamp
The lamp with voltage range between 70 V and 180 V

3.12 EHV lamp


The lamp with voltage range over 180 V

3.13 Ballast
The device connected between the supply and one or more discharge lamps which serve
mainly to limit the current of the lamp(s) to the required value

3.14 Cap (or base)


The part of the lamp which provides connection to the electrical supply by means of a
lamp-holder or lamp connector and, in most cases, also serves to retain the lamp in the
lamp-holder.

3.15 Lamp-holder
The device which holds the lamp in position, usually by having the cap inserted in it, in
which case it also provides the means of connecting the lamp to the electric supply

3.16 Type test for the lamps


The test or a series of tests made on a type test sample for the purpose of checking
compliance of the design of a given product with the requirements of the relevant standard

3.17 Type test sample


The sample consisting of one or more similar units submitted by the manufacturer or the
responsible vendor for the purpose of a type test

4.2 Ratings

4.2.1 Nominal wattage


The nominal wattage of the lamps shall be determined in accordance with the Table 2 of
this specification.

4.2.2 Rated frequency


The rated frequency shall be 50 Hz.

4.2.3 Rated voltage of the ballast


The rated voltage of the ballast shall be 230 V.

5 Requirements
5.1 Required structure

5.1.1 Dimensions of the lamps and caps


The dimensions of the lamps and caps shall comply with the Table 3 of this
specification.

5.1.2 Cap of the lamp


(a) The dimensions of the lamp cap shall comply with the clause 5.1.1 of this
specification.
(b) The cap of the lamp shall meet the relevant clauses of the IEC 60061-1.

5.1.3 Creepage distance


The minimum creepage distance between contact pin(s) or contacts and a touchable
metal shell of the cap shall be in accordance with the requirements of IEC 60061-4.

5.1.4 Construction and assembly


Caps shall be so constructed and assembled to the bulbs that the whole assembly
remains intact and attached during and after normal operation.

5.1.5 Parts which can become accidentally live


Metal parts intended to be insulated from live parts shall not be or become live. Any
movable conductive material shall be placed, without the use of a tool, in the most onerous
position before inspection.

5.1.6 Insulation resistance
Lamps where the metal shell of the cap can be touched after insertion into the holder
shall have an insulation resistance between the metal shell of the cap and the pin(s) or
contacts of not less than 2 MΩ.

5.1.7 Thermal requirements


Insulating material of caps, which provide protection against electric shock, shall be
resistant to heat and fire.

5.2 Required performance

5.2.1 Lamp starting


The lamp starting test under the conditions below shall be passed.
(a) Test voltage: 198 (V)
(b) Maximum starting time: 5 s
(c) Pulse shape: sinusoidal wave with height of 2,775 ± 25
(d) Rising time: 0.6 μs
(d) Duration time: 0.95 ± 0.05 μs

5.2.2 Worm-up test


The Worm-up test under the conditions below shall be passed.
(a) Test voltage: 198 (V)
(b) Maximum time required to reach 50 V minimum at lamp terminals: 5 s

5.2.3 Characteristics of the lamps


The characteristics of the lamps shall comply with the values in the Table 4 of this
specification.

5.2.4 Reference ballast characteristics
The ballast for the lamp shall comply with the characteristics in the Table 5 of this
specification.

5.2.5 Ballast design information

5.2.6 Efficiency
The efficiency of the lamp shall be stated by the supplier.

5.2.7 Life
(a) The life of the lamp shall be stated by the supplier.
(b) The life of the lamp shall not be less than 12,000 hours.

5.2.8 Color rendering index


The color rendering index (CRI) shall be stated by the supplier.

5.2.9 Photometric characteristics


The initial reading of the luminous flux of the lamp shall not be less than 90 % of the
rated value.

5.2.10 Lamp stability with rapidly reduced supply voltage
The lamp shall not extinguish if the supply voltage falls from 100 % to 90 % of the rated
supply voltage in not more than 0.5 s and remains at that value for at least 5 s.

5.2.11 Color temperature


The color temperature of the lamps shall not less than 2,000 °K.

6 Tests
6.1 Type tests
The type tests shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant clauses of IEC
standards, and at least below tests shall be passed.
(a) Dimensions: 5.1.1 of this specification
(b) Creepage distance: IEC 60061-4
(c) Lamp starting test: 7.1 of IEC 60662
(d) Lamp warm-up test: 7.2 of IEC 60662
(e) Electrical characteristic test: 7.4 of IEC 60662
(f) Extinguishing voltage test: 7.5 of IEC 60662
(g) Resistance to pull test: 4.3.2.1 of IEC 62035
(h) Resistance to torque test: 4.3.2.2 of IEC 62035
(i) Insulation resistance test: 4.4.2 of IEC 62035
(j) Electric strength test: 4.4.3 of IEC 62035
(k) Thermal test: 4.5 of IEC 62035
The procedure of the test shall be in compliance with the clause 7 of the IEC 62035.

7 Marking
7.1 Lamp marking
The lamps shall be marked as follows;
(a) manufacturer name and/or trade mark,
(b) nominal wattage and/or other indication which identifies the lamp,
(c) symbol to indicate starting method (internal or external),
(d) symbol according to Annex H of IEC 62035.

7.2 Requirement of lamp marking


(a) The lamp marking shall be legible and durable.

(b) The size of graphical symbols shall comply with Annex H of IEC 62035.

8 Packing and delivery


The supplier shall provide packing of the lamps to prevent their damage or deterioration
during transit to their final destination and long period of storage. The packing shall be
sufficient to withstand, without limitation and exposure to extreme temperatures, salt and
precipitation during transit and open storage.
(a) All lamps and their components shall be shipped from the factory to the specified site.
(b) The size and weight of packing cases shall be taken into consideration, where
appropriate, the remoteness of the lamps’ final destination.
(c) Each shipment shall include a detailed packing list identifying all items by part
number, including hardware.
(d) All material shall be carefully loaded for protection during shipment.
(e) All materials shall be arranged to allow safe unloading at the site.
(g) There shall be handling instruction to minimize damage.

The outer packing must be clearly marked on at least four (4) sides as follows;
(a) Name of the procuring department
(b) Name of the supplier
(c) Contract description
(d) Final destination
(e) Gross weight
(f) Any special lifting instructions
(g) Any special handling instructions
(h) Any relevant pollution or environment classifications

9 Documents and certificates


9.1 Information to be given with GECOL

9.1.1 Service conditions


Excluding the normal conditions referred in the clause 1.2.1 of this specification, service
conditions at which the surge arrester will be installed shall be stated by GECOL.

9.1.2 Rated values and characteristics


The specific ratings shall be stated by GECOL.

9.2 Information to given with suppliers

9.2.1 Technical data sheet


The technical data sheet shall be filled and provided by supplier according to the annex
A of this specification.

9.2.2 Certificates of type tests


The certificates of type tests according to clause 6.1 of this specification shall be
provided by supplier.

9.2.3 Guidelines and manuals


The supplier should provide instructions for the transport, storage, installation, operation
and maintenance of the lamp. The instructions for the transport and storage should be given
before delivery, and the instructions for the installation, operation and maintenance should
be given by the time of delivery at the latest.
(a) The instructions for installation shall be provided by the supplier.
(b) The instructions for operation shall be provided by the supplier.
(c) The instructions for maintenance shall be provided by the supplier.
(d) The schedule for maintenance shall be specified by supplier.

9.2.4 Safety standards


The safety standards for installation, operation and maintenance shall be provided by
supplier.

9.2.5 Related drawings


The related drawings including the shape and dimensions of the lamp shall be provided
by supplier.

10 Warranty
The supplier shall provide the full warranty on all equipment supplied during the period
specified below. The warranty shall cover all parts and all costs, which are directly
attributable to the supplier. Warranty coverage shall begin on the date that the equipment is
received.
The warranty period shall be six months.
