A1 PROJECT REPORT ON A SIGNPOST

PROJECT CARRIED OUT BETWEEN 12TH

MARCH,2023 AND 4TH APRIL,2023, BY THE
SUCCESS GROUP, S.3, 2023.
1.1. Introduction
A project was carried out after brainstorming a number
of problems in the society, and finding out which, could be
solved using the knowledge obtained from the study of
English language by the Success Group, S.3, 2023.

1.2. Societal problem

On critical looking and observation, we found out that
the litter management of Nyenga Secondary School
community was poor. Litter was being dumped recklessly all
over the compound, most especially, around water sources,
classroom doors, latrines and canteens.

1.3. Solution
A survey was carried out within the school community and
in conclusion, we analysed that about ninety percent (90%) of the
population of the school had no reason to love and protect their
environment.
We decided to come up with a way of sensitizing the
general public of Nyenga Secondary School, about their
responsibility and obligation towards the sanitation of their
environment.

12 .4. Knowledge
We applied the knowledge acquired through the study of
Land pollution, a topic under a theme, ‘Environmental pollution’,
under English language, to come up with a message to the public.

1.5. Project /subject name

We decided to make a signpost bearing a message, calling
upon the public to love and protect their environment.

1.6. Message.
After clear analysis and discussion, we came up with a
phrase ‘Cherish your environment', calling upon one to strongly
love and protect his or her environment.

1.7. Target
We made the project aiming at informing the general public
of Nyenga Secondary School about their obligation towards
protecting the environment.

1.8. Vision
We carried out the project looking forward to producing a
modal school with the cleanest environment in the country, by
the end of 2024.

1.9. Materials
In order to come up with the work produced, we used a
metallic pole, metal sheet, plain papers, cutters, paraffin,
squeege(sponge), masking tape, stones, sand, cement, painting
brushes, water and a hoe.

1.10. Acquisition of materials

After analyzing and knowing the materials and requirements
to use, we suggested ways of obtaining these materials and the

3 following methods were applied in order to obtain the different
materials.

 Collecting money
As a group, we recognized that our population could favour
us do the work. Each member contributed one thousand shillings
only and we summed up with eighty thousand shillings only. Using
this money, we were able to buy the metal pole, metal sheet,
white paint, cutters and pay for welding.

 Donations
We got some help and support from the Art teacher, Mr.
Emma, who provided us with paraffin, paint, masking tape, and
the squeege that we used throughout the project.

 Gathering
For some of the materials that were available in the
environment such as stones and sand we took time to gather
them and collect them so as to reduce on the costs.

1.11. Methodology
A number of steps were taken to make our message come
out of our minds and be presented on the ground.

1.11.1 Sketching the plan

With the help from some art students in our class, we
discussed and came up with different illustrations and ideas of
how our sign post would look like.
Lots of illustrations were drawn, however much some
remained unpresented on paper. We then start and thought of

which illustration could produce the best of us, since we could not
present all ideas on one signpost.
At the end, we came up with a good illustration of the
environment in the background, a person dumping rubbish in a
dust bin on top, and the phrase in the middle of the illustration.
1.11.2 Construction and cutting out letters
We constructed (printed) block letters on plain papers. We
made the letters large enough so that on printing, one can easily
read them from a distance.

5 Using cutters, we started cutting out the negatives and
leaving the positives in the letters so that we can print them as cut

on the signpost.

61.11.3 Painting
We painted the welded signpost with white paint and

then allowed it to dry.

When it dried we used smaller painting brushes, orange and black
paint the structure of the environment.

7 On drying, we attached to the flame our letter cut out and
printed it using blue paint and squeegee.

We also attached the dustbin structure to the flame and

printed it out using black and white colours.

10 Using a piece of paper, pen, and cutter, we constructed
and cut out a label, ‘By S3B, 2023’, in order to represent our class
and for remembrance.

1.17.12 Pinning
After a period of three days, we obtained stones,
sand, and cement and mixed to form concrete. We then dug a
hole of 30cm deep and pinned the signpost. We ensured firmness
of the signpost by adding and sealing the with concrete.

1.12.
11 Position
We decided to pin our signpost along the entrance route
from the gate so as to make it readily visible to every person
entering or leaving the school. The position was to mainly target
the day scholars so that they read through as they enter and leave
school, since they contribute the largest percentage of the school.

1.13. Time frame

The project was started on 12th March, 2023 and ended on
4th April, 2023. This indicates that the work was carried out within
a three weeks’ time.
The table below shows the time frame of the project
Week Activity

1.14. Challenges
During the course of carrying out the project, a number of
challenges came our way. In these we had;
 Delay of materials and money

12 Although we budgeted a fair contribution, to some
membersit seemed to be much as some failed to pay and
some never wanted to contribute. This caused the delay in
the supply of materials to be used most especially the
metallic frame.
 Discouragements
A number of students and non-teaching staff came in
and discouraged us during the course of the processing.
Our small sizes made us to be undermined and
abused. They thought we could never make it.
 Lack of enough skills
Inspite of the fact that we had some guidance from
the art teacher, we found it difficult to do something we had
never done before, doing activities such as; printing on large
surfaces, mixing colours, determining positives and
negatives, drawing illustrations directly on a signpost
without rubbing, and budgeting, gave us a very hard time.No
one among us had ever made a signpost. It was a great
challenge that even made us delay to produce the work.
 Lack of cooperation.
However much we had agreed as a group on the
project, there are some members who never wanted to
participate at all, this gave us had time to force and advise
these people to engage in the group work.

1.15. Impact and predictions

Within an experimental period of two weeks, about 15% of
the school population had discovered why they have to love and
protect their environment.
Basing on the above observation, we predict that by the
end of 2024, about ninety percent (90%) of the people in the

13 school will be having a reason to protect and love their
environment. With this, we shall be able to produce the cleanest
environment by 2024.

1.16. Achievements
By the end of the project we had got skills of printing and
making signposts, mixing colours and making surveys.
Since we had to interact with a number of teachers, our
language register was improved as we learnt to be formal and
polite. This gave us ability to communicate effectively to all kinds
of people with confidence and respect.
The project brought together as we were working in
agreement at every step. We got to appreciate every one’s work
independent of size, background, tribe gender or even talent. The
project made us one.
The discussions we had equipped us with skills of
presenting ideas, making decisions, and sketching something
exactly as is described by someone else.

1.17. Acknowledgements
We acknowledge the work of the following personnels who
helped to come out with a meaningful work:

1.17.1 Madam Namulega Loyce

We are so appreciative for the supportive and constructive
mind of our teacher of English. She was always there to support
us and guide us at all moments

1.17.2
14 Mr. Asiinge Emmanuel
We take this opportunity to thank this teacher for this time
and love he expressed through donating to us paint, masking tape
and squeege for the effective production of our work. He was also
present during printing and painting, guiding us.

1.17.3 Mr. Jaggu Jackson

We take time to acknowledge the great advice and time
offered by this teacher to ensure that the signposts are pinned.
He provided cement which we used to pin the signpost.

1.17.4 The head-teacher Mr. Kanyike Nelson

He did a great work of allowing us to pin the signpost and
also allocating us where to pin it.
Without the great work of these people, our work would
have stayed dreams for ever.

1.18. Recommendation
We call upon the school administration to come up and
provide us with funds and materials so that we can produce more
signposts, posters and fliers containing different messages on
pollution, sex education and other information,so as to protect
our environment. They should also provide us with more dustbins
to ensure proper disposal of rubbish in the school.
