Attempt TWO questions from section A, and TWO questions from section B.
If you attempt 3, only the best 2 will be counted. All questions carry equal weight.
In section B questions you may assume g = 10m/s2 .

SECTION A: Vectors - Answer two questions from this section.

Any numerical answers given as decimals should be correct to one decimal place.

A1. Let a, b and c be vectors given by a = i − j − k , b = 2i + 4k and c = 3i − j + 2k.

(i) Calculate the vector d = 3a + b − c, and find its magnitude and direction
cosines.
(ii) Evaluate a · b and hence determine the angle between the vectors a and b.
(iii) Find the value of m for which 4i + 2mj + 3mk is perpendicular to c.

Let f and g be vectors given by f = i + 2j + k and g = −2i + j + 3k.

(iv) Find the projection of g in the direction f.

−→ −→
(v) Find the area of a triangle ABC where AB = f and AC = g.

A2. (i) The point A has coordinates (2, 0, 4) and the point B has coordinates (5, −1, 5).
Find the vector equation of the line passing through A and B.
(ii) Find the point where the line obtained in (i) intersects the plane x −5y +2z = 0.
(iii) Write down the vector equation of a second line, with Cartesian equation:
z +3
−5 − x = y − 1 = .

(iv) Show that the lines given in parts (i) and (iii) intersect, and find the point of
intersection.
(v) Find a vector perpendicular to the lines given in part (i) and (iii).

A3. Let A, B, C be three points with coordinates (1, 1, 2), (−1, 2, −1), and (2, −1, 2)
respectively.
−→ −→
(i) Find the vectors AB and AC.
(ii) Find a vector normal to the plane containing the points A,B and C. Hence find
the equation of this plane both in the form r · n = a · n and also in the Cartesian
form.
(iii) Find the angle between the plane in part (ii), and the plane x − y + 2z = 2.
(iv) By setting x = 0 in the Cartesian equations of the two planes, find the y and z
co-ordinates of a point (0, y , z) which lies on the intersection of the the plane
in part (ii) and the plane x − y + 2z = 2.
(v) Hence, find the vector equation of the line of intersection of the two planes.

SECTION B: Statics - Answer two questions from this section.

You may assume g = 10m/s2 . Any numerical answers given as decimals should be
correct to one decimal place.

B1. (i) A particle is held in equilibrium by forces with magnitudes and directions as
shown below. Find F = |F| and θ.

(ii) A crane is made from of a heavy uniform beam of mass 60kg and length 8m,
attached at one end to a wall by a hinge, and held in a horizontal position by
a cable of length 10m, attached to the wall 6m above the hinge. The crane is
lifting a mass 120kg at the end of the beam, as shown in the diagram below.
By considering the torque about the hinge, find the tension in the cable.

(iii) A particle of mass 10kg is held by a string inclined at 30◦ to the horizontal, and
by a second string at 45◦ to the horizontal. This second string passes over a
smooth, frictionless pulley, and is attached at its other end to a second particle
of mass mkg which rests upon a smooth, frictionless plane inclined at 45◦ to
the horizontal, so that the string is parallel to the plane: see the diagram below.

B2. (i) A block of mass 10kg rests on a rough horizontal plane with coefficient of
friction 0.5. A light, horizontal string is attached to the block, as shown below.
Draw a diagram showing all forces on the block, and find the tension in the
string required to move the block.

(ii) Two blocks, each of mass 5kg rest on a rough horizontal plane with coefficient
of friction 0.5, and are connected with a horizontal string. The right-hand block
is attached to a second string inclined at 30◦ to the horizontal as shown in the
diagram below. The tension in the inclined string is increased until the blocks
begin to move. The coefficient of friction remains equal to 0.5. Draw separate
diagrams showing the forces on each block and find the tension in each string
when the blocks begin to move.

(iii) The 10kg block is placed on a rough plane inclined at 30◦ to the horizontal,
with coefficient of friction 0.5, and is held in place by a string attached parallel
to the plane, as shown below. Draw a diagram showing all forces on the block
and find the minimum tension in the string to prevent the block sliding down
the plane, and the maximum tension before the block slides up the plane.

couple.
(b) A third force F3 = −F1 − F2 is now applied at the point (0, y , z). Find
F3 , and find the values of y and z so that the total torque from the three
forces is zero.
(ii) A ladder of mass 20kg and length 6m rests against a smooth vertical wall, at
an angle of 65◦ to the horizontal, with its base on rough horizontal ground.
A painter of mass 80kg can climb to the top of the ladder without the ladder
slipping.
